AMUEL WADE MCATEE, SR.:
In 1839, Samuel built a log cabin in the southern part of Davis Co., Iowa. He and his brother Benedict thought they were both in Scotland Co., Missouri, but when the land was surveyed, Samuel's claim was in Davis County and Benedict's was in Scotland County. Samuel was one of the first officials of Davis County. He was a supervisor fo the county and he and some others met to name the city of Bloomfield, Iowa. (He proposed Jefferson) In 1844, he was elected commissioner (he had received 207 votes in April, 1844 during Davis County's first election) and was also a delegate to the Territorial Convention to apply for admission to the Union. He was elected Sheriff, Assessor, and County Judge. He was a judge from 1857-1866. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Southern Iowa Normal and Scientific Institute established on January 2, 174. It no longer exists, but was originally located in Bloomfield, Iowa.
Samuel and Elizabeth owned property as follows: 9-5-1848 SE 1/4 Sec. 7 Twp 67 Range 13 40 Acres; 6-25-1849 Lots #3, 4, 5, Sec 18 Twp 67 Range 13 154.22 Acres; 5-9-1851 Lot #1 Sec 18 Twp 67 Range 13 72.49 Acres. He owned land 10 miles south of Bloomfield in 1844 and moved to Bloomfield in 1848. Sam was listed in Scotland Co., Missouri in 1840 along with Benjamin E. Mudd, father of Elizabeth (Samuel's wife).

He married HELEN MAY BUFORD October 8, 1844 in Adair Co., Missouri, daughter of HENRY BUFORD and EMILY MURLEY. She was born March 5, 1825 in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, and died January 4, 1926 in Clyde, Cloud Co., Kansas.

Notes for B
ENJAMIN BENEDICT MCATEE:
Benjamin homesteaded the E/2 and NW/4 of SW4-19 and NE/4NW4-30-4-3 Washington Co. Kansas, application #723 dated 12-1-1873. This homestead was located on the south border of the homestead of George W. Hess.

Benjamin left Kentucky with his younger brother Samuel Wade McAtee apparently in the 1830's when they proceeded to the lead mines of Galena, Illinois where they stayed for several years. They then went to the newly created state of Iowa where they both took up claims. The claims were adjoining so they built a cabin astriding both claims so they could live together. When the state boundary was finally determined between Iowa and Missouri, the state line passed right through the cabin. (Samuel's in Iowa; Benjamin's in Missouri) Both appeared in the 1847 Iowa State Census having three persons in each family. Davis County was organized from Van Buren County in 1843. In October 1844, Benjamin married Helen Buford in Adair County, Missouri. About 1859, Benjamin and his family (wife and 5 children) moved to Richardson County Nebraska where two more children were born. (1860 Census of Franklin Twp, Richardson Co., NE; Page 5152, family 422, line 34) They lived in Nebraska until the opening of Kansas to settlers. They then moved to Clifton Twp, Washington Co., Kansas. The 1880 Federal Census for Washington Co., Kansas shows the parents for Benjamin both being born in Maryland. While in Iowa or Missouri, Benjamin Benedict and his brother-in-law, Ayres Taylor, platted Del Norte townsite in June 1851 that failed. His brother George McAtee Jr. lived in this same area. Their father lived with a daughter Lucy Frazier in Ralls County, Missouri in 1850. It is known that George McAtee Sr. died after 1850 and Lucy died in Ralls Co., Missouri December 11, 1872. (Judy Nelson report)

Helen's family is listed in the book "Buford Family in America". Helen, at the age of 94, moved in with her daughter Emma C. Shurtleff in Clyde, Kansas and lived there until her death in 1926. (Judy Nelson report)
