Gustav Adolf Läng Lindstrom (b. 1854, d. 1927)

Gustav Adolf Läng Lindstrom (son of Anton Läng and Anna Christina Räsk) was born 1854 in Lindköpping, Smäland, Sweden, and died 1927 in Chicago,IL. He married Maria Christina Anderson on 1882 in Chicago,IL, daughter of Olaf Anderson and Hannah Olson.

Notes for Gustav Adolf Läng Lindstrom:
As a young man he was a seaman aboard a merchant sailing ship. During a storm at sea, he was high above the deck, standing on ropes, furling a sail- when he lost his footing and fell to the deck below. He suffered a compound fracture (which pushed the bone through the thigh) It left him with a limp and ended his sailing days.
For a short time afterwards he attempted to work the lake boats. when even this became impossible, he was forced to become a carpenter.

Dad remembers one room in his home filled with nothing but wood-working equipment.

Another memory is going to the saloon at Milton and Chicago Avenues with a small blue enamel pail to get the sudsy beer for Grandpa Gustav. He remembers the shiny brass spitoons and the smell of sawdust and stale beer.

Gustav never learned much English and when he drank, which was often, he would sing the lusty,rolicking songs of the sea and curse at his fate.

Uncle Gene said that the reason Gustav's last name differs from his father's is because when he was working on the railroad there was another Lang and their pay got mixed up all the time. So he just changed his name to simplify things!
