 Includes NotesNotes for Richard Hardacre:
Dick died in a submarine which was sunk during WW2. I have all Dick's papers from the Navy, including the letter from the king and queen offereing their condolences.
My mother was obviously very fond of Dick and used to talk about him quite a lot and from being a child I can remember feeling a special affinity to him. He was a good swimmer and a bit of a daredevil. During the war he wrote to my dad telling him he'd been in a bit of trouble and had his pay docked because he had hit someone on his submarine who had wanted to treat him like a woman! His older brother Harry had told him to be careful with women and the code for having sex with a woman was 'to break a leg', so that his mother could read his letters. One of his letters says that he's not broken a leg yet.
