Maxwell Thomas Petch (son of Claude PETCH and Muriel Ida Simons) was born 08 Nov 1924 in Stratford New Zealand, and died 29 Oct 1976 in Hamilton New Zealand. He married Eva Patricia Wallace on 29 Jan 1954 in Hamilton New Zealand, daughter of Bruce Mcgregor Wallace and Ellen Sabina Jones.

Maxwell Thomas Petch was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 7 years old.It is believed that he had recently had scarlet fever and that the diagnosis may have been incorrect. However, he adminstered insulin and as a result lost his eyesight before he was 21.

He was offered a chance to stand for government in 1960 after he had successfully accomplished getting sound activated at pedestrian crossings in Hamilton.

He spent his life making moccasins fromm sheepskin and suede, cane birdcages and pet and other baskets. He was the first blind person in New Zealand to receive a 'talking book' machine and he played indoor bowls, predominantly for the Waikato Blind Indoor Bowling club. He won many cups including the Rosebowl and Lovelock Cup several years in a row.
