John Alexander McKane Wallace (son of William Wallace and Catherine McKane) was born 1818 in Tipperary Ireland, and died 29 Dec 1895 in Wanganui, New Zealand1. He married Esther Maize (Mayes).

John and his two brothers Arthur and James all joined the 65th regimentwhich left Chatham in 1846 and travelled to Tasmania. The 65th regiment was from the 2nd Yorkshire, North Riding and was a light infantry unit. The three were employed there as prison guards on garrison duty. They were then transferred to New Zealand via Sydney and landed in Wellington. Later they went to Wanganui to protect settlers who were being threatened by the maoris. John bought his way out of the army in 1849 and became a farmer near Wanganui.
