, and died 1845 in Shelby Creek, Pike Co., KY. She married JOHN (JOHANNES) MAY on March 1780 in Berkley Co., VA, son of FRANTZ "FRANCIS" PETER MEY I and ANNA MARIA.
Notes for SARAH JANE PHILLIPS:
There are some who think "Pollard" was the surname of the mother of Sarah Jane Phillips; but , that has not been proven at this time(1999).
She was 86 at the time her son, Samuel May, assisted in getting her
Revolutionary War Pension # VA.R. 7056. It is an interesting document but too long to presen t here (See notes on John May). In this pension application it is explained why she named he r last child, her son, Tlepolard Phillip Pollard May. (it was a reference to HOMER).
Her father was John Thomas Phillips (not proven).
Another interesting document is her consent for her daughter "Poly" (Mary Polly May) to be ma rried to Peyton Justice. These records may be found either in Pike County or Floyd County , I have seen a transcript of it. - Virginia Burke May Rhoades.
In the 9-page manuscript that I found (1991) in the Vertical Files (Family
Folders) at the Kentucky Historical Society Library, Frankfort, Kentucky, by
Mrs. Howard Walker Woodruff (1967) of Kansas City, Missouri, she states:
"Sarah Jane Phillips was born in 1759. She died in the fall of 1845 and is
buried beside her husband. (William Keathley Graveyard located on the
original homestead of her husband, John May). (VaR7056, gravestone, grandson Reuben May). S arah Jane Phillips was the daughter of THOMAS PHILLIPS and according to family tradition, he r mother was a POLLARD. The first appearance of Thomas Phillips in the records of Berkley Cou nty (Va., now W. Va.) is in January, 1778 when her purchased land from Adam Steffen, both o f Berkley Co.
This coincides with a statement of Sarah Jane Phillips May in her pension
application, that she `was not living in that part of the country when John
May entered the service in 1777, but came there (to Berkley Co.) while he was
in the service'. She offers no clue to the family's whereabouts prior to this time." (See t he notes about THOMAS PHILLIPS for a few more references to him).
In her 86th year Sarah Jane Phillips May gave a statement to the Clerk at Pike County, Kentuc ky for application of a Revolutionary War Pension, R7056.
