, and died 1780 in Berkeley Co., VA. He married POLLARD (maybe).
Notes for JOHN THOMAS PHILLIPS SENIOR (COLONEL):
According to the "Woodruff Papers" (See notes on Sarah Jane Phillips) Sarah
Jane was the daughter of Thomas Phillips and according to family tradition, her mother wa s a Pollard. The first appearance of Thomas Phillips in the records of Berkley County (Va. , now W. Va.) is in January, 1778 when he purchased land from Adam Steffen, both of Berkley C ounty. This coincides with a statement of Sarah Phillips May in her Pension Application (VAR7 056), that she was not living in that part of the country when John May entered the service ( in Berkley) in 1777, but came there (to Berkley Co.) `while he was in the service'. She offer s no clue to her family's whereabouts prior to this time. In Berkley County Will Book I:99 , dated 14 September, 1780 -- Appraisal of the slaves of Thomas Phillips, dec'd, by Auty Nobl e, Daniel Beal and Michel McKewn. From this we know that a Thomas Phillips died in the summe r of 1780 or prior to this time. There was no will or settlement of the estate. In the foll owing years there are references to a Thomas Phillips and his wife, ELIZABETH, known son of T homas, Senior, who would be a brother of our Sarah Jane (Phillips) May." - end of quote fro m Woodruff paper, page 2.
One source lists Thomas Phillips as "Colonel" Thomas Phillips. We should try
to prove or disprove this.
The Home Page on America-on-Line of John W. Picklesimer (of Lexington, KY) also gives the tit le "Colonel" for Thomas Phillips, Senior.
