He emigrated on Nov 1 1784 from Crab Orchard KY. (153)(560) -Per Vivian F. Colvin, he was listed on the Frederick Co. VA Tax List as head of a family of 8 whites. This is disputed by Marilyn R Solari, who states in a 7/4/1998 post to Colvin-L@rootsweb.com:
"Joseph Colvin and family are named among those in an emigrant party of 8 or 10 families which left Staunton, VA on 1 Oct 1784, arriving at Crab Orchard, KY in Lincoln Co., KY on 1 Nov 1784. [Per "Memoirs of Jane (Allen) Trimble," excerpt from Vivian F. Colvin, autobiography of William A. Trimble of Highland Co., OH, and Waddell's "History of Augusta Co., VA."] This party also included James Trimble & wife Jane [Allen] Trimble,
& family [called distant relatives of Joseph Colvin]; William Anderson, William Allen, Robert Trimble, the Moffetts [per Waddell] and two to four others unknown."

He died between 1810 and 1820.(561) "Joseph, Sr. undoubtedly died between 1810 and 1820 since he is not listed as head of household in the 1820 census and doesn't appear to be living in the household of any of his sons [can't say about the households of all his daughters, however]." Possibly of Augusta Co. VA, acording to Marilyn R. Solari, who stated on 7/4/1998 :

"One must look ... to the Joseph Colvin of Augusta Co., VA. In 1766/67, Joseph Colvin wit. the will of Joseph Crockett [Augusta Co., VA Will Bk 3:506]. Joseph Crockett lived on the South Fork of the Roanoke River and had land adjacent to Samuel Montgomery on the head of Camp Run. [The Montgomerys removed to the Lincoln Co., KY area in the late 1770's.] Several of Joseph Colvin, Sr.'s children later married Montgomerys in Lincoln Co., KY.

Joseph Colvin had 70 acres on the Roanoke River surveyed for him on 9 Dec 1767 [Survey Bk O:83 Augusta Co., VA]. Samuel Crockett, son of Joseph Crockett above, had land surveyed on the Roanoke River on 11 and 13 Nov 1767. I searched Augusta Co., VA Deeds for a record of the sale of Joseph's surveyed land but did not find one, nor did I find any deeds at all in Joseph Colvin's name.

In June 1769, Joseph Colvin 'alias Corbin' was sued by William Spiller in Augusta Co., VA for a debt contracted by Joseph in 1760-1761 while Joseph, having 'joined the Regiment,' was living in King William Co., VA in the household of William Loggins. The suit stated that Joseph Colvin had since married a widow, had several children, and had taken up residence about 6 miles below Staunton in Augusta Co., VA. [Augusta Co., VA Court Records
per Vol. 1, p.358 of Lyman Chalkey's 'Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in America,' Gen. Pub. Co., Baltimore, 1989]. There could be several reasons why Joseph Colvin was called "alias Corbin" in this suit. His mother may have been widowed and remarried to a Corbin, with her Colvin children being known by their stepfather's surname until they came
of age and assumed their real surname. Or - the name may simply have been misspelled in prior records as 'Corbin' - hence, the use of 'alias Corbin' to correct the error.

In searching for earlier records which might apply to the origins of Joseph Colvin of Augusta Co., VA, I ran across a Spotsylvania Co., VA court record dated 5 Aug 1741 [Order Book 1738-1749, pg. 134] in which the Churchwardens were directed to bind out Charles and Joseph Colvin to Andrew Watson, they being children of William Colvin who had "runaway" and neglected them. William Colvin appears in Spotsylvania Co. Court Records, at times with his wife, Susannah, as early as 7 Aug 1739 and may very well have been the same man as the William Corbin noted in Court records in Feb. and April of 1739 [but not thereafter]. A William "Login" also appears in these early court records from 1741 thru 1748. In 1748 and 1749, numerous suits of debt appear against William Login who did not attend court to defend himself. He may have been the William Loggin of King William Co. who brought suit in 1769 against Joseph Colvin for debts incurred in 1760-1761.

There is not enough proof available to state with any certainty that Joseph Colvin, son of William who had 'runaway', was indeed Joseph Colvin later of King William and then Augusta Co., VA. Its just the only record I've ever found of a Joseph Colvin who MIGHT be Joseph of Augusta Co., VA/Lincoln Co., KY.

Joseph Colvin was not living in 1840 Washington Co., KY. That was Joseph Colvin, Jr., son of Joseph, Sr., who in 1840 was aged 60 to 70 or b.ca 1770-1780 [in 1780 actually so age 60 but in his 61st year at the time of the 1840 census]. Joseph, Sr. undoubtedly died between 1810 and 1820 since he is not listed as head of household in the 1820 census and doesn't appear to be living in the household of any of his sons [can't say about the households of all his daughters, however]."
