-Never married.
-According to her obituary, she reared five nieces and nephews in her home, including
Bonnie Ward Scruggs and Marvin Ross (dec.) of Willisburg KY, Mrs Lena Clarke
of Waukenan IL, Mrs. Estelle Clarke of Albuquerque NM, and Onis Ward (dec.) of
Batavia IL, and took in some 18 relatives at one time or another.
-She was a midwife, went on-call with Dr. Noey. She was very generous and shared
with whomever was in need at the time, whether orphan, sick, or family.
-She was widely known for her corncob pipe, which she smoked until she died.
-According to her nephew, Calvin T. Coslow (as related to CB Coslow when the
latter was diagnosed with mild psorasis in 1988), Aunt Bet had a severe case
of psoriasis on her hands that was particularly bad during wintertime. To "supplement"
her income, she customarily raised chickens and sold the eggs; she also took
in washing from neighbors.
She suffered greatly from the latter, because the lye soap (which was universally
used at that time by country folk because it could be made at home from materials
at hand) would soak into the lesions and inflame them, causing great pain.
-Aunt Bet was extraordinarily modest -- during a late-night visit (that's about
8:00 p.m. without electricity) during the late 1940s to her home, which was
on what is now called Baker Lane), I remember her saying that she never looked
at herself in the mirror while undressed; she said that she didn't look at her
body even when bathing.
