22. Joseph Charles THOMPSON

1880 Lingo Twp, Macon Co., MO Census Part IV lists Joseph "Tompson"
age 41, head of household, a miner, married to wife Sarah age 37, keepinghouse,
with children: Joseph age 17 working on farm, William age 15 working on farm,
John age 13, James age 10, Robert age 5, George age 2, and Albert age 11 months.
No daughters were born at this time. He resided Bellefontaine Avenue in 1928
in Kansas City, MO. He died on 10 May 1928 in Kansas City, MO. He was buried
on 13 May 1928 in East Oakwood Cemetery, Bevier, MO. He was a Miner. He resided
in Mississippi. He served in the military in Civil War. From Fay Fischer letter
1985:
Joseph C. Thompson, born 10 Oct 1830 at Borden, England. He grew to manhood in
Ohio, in the 1850s he was living at Middleport, Meigs Co., Ohio.
He married Sarah A. Deaton in 1860, she was 16 and he was 30. She was born 18
Jan 1844 in Virginia.
At the start of the Civil War, Joseph C. was offered a position as a Lieutenant
in the Confederate Army, but didn't take it because he was against slavery. Because
of the way he felt about slavery, his house was burned down. He and Sarah moved
back to their old home in Ohio.
Joseph did enlist, with the Union on 20 Sep 1861 and was assigned to a calvary
unit. He served until the war was over, with Company 1 2nd Reg't Cav. Vols. from
Mason City, West Virginia. He was in the line of fire at Guyandotte, West Va.,
was taken prisoner at one time, but escaped. He was kicked in the stomach by
his commander's (Allen Tall) horse, the injury bothered him the rest of his life.
He was honorably discharged at Wheeling, West Va., on 28 Nov 1864.
After the Civil War he went back to doing his trade as a coal miner (Collier.)
By the time their first son was born they had moved to Jackson Co., West Va.,
from there they moved to Mason Co., West Va., where their 2nd and 3rd sons were
born. By the time their 4th child was born, they had moved to Curdsville, Ky.
From there they went to Hendersen, Ky, where their 5th child was born. Next they
moved to Washington, Ind. where their next three children were born. By 1881
they were living in Macon, MO where their last four children were born.
Sarah died at Macon, MO on 12 Jan 1887 at the age of 42.
With his children ranging from ages 3 to 17, Joseph had to find another mother
for them, so he married Margaret "Maggie" Hardwick Briggs on 4 Sep
1887 at Deepwater, MO, she was born in 1836, and died 11 Jan 1916 at St. Cloud,
Florida, where she and Joseph had moved to. She had a son from a former marriage.
Joseph married again, this time to Edna S., born 1846, died 1917.
Three years later on 1 May 1920, Joseph moved to Bevier, MO, and in 1926 with
failing health he moved to Kansas City, MO, to live with his daughter. He died
there on 10 May 1928, was given a military funeral at Bevier where he is buried.
He was married to Sarah DEATON. 23. Sarah DEATON
was born on 18 Jan 1844 in Virginia. She died on 12 Jan 1877 in Bevier, MO.
She was buried in East Oakwood Cemetery, Bevier, MO. She was 7/8 Cherokee or
Pruett Indian. If Cherokee, came from Virginia. If Pruett, came from California.

is twin sister to Annie.
Has a granddaughter Fay Fischer. She died on 15 Jan 1947 in Broseley, MO (Butler
County).

C THOMPSON was born on 3 Apr 1865 in Mason County, WV. He died in 1927.
