DEATH CAME SUDDENLY TO WM. C. WELLS

He Dropped Dead On the Street This Afternoon at the C orner of Hancock and
Union.

DEMISE CAUSED BY HEART TROUBLE

He was Just Entering the Larkin Grocery at That Point When He Was Overcome;
Body Taken Home.

Col. W.C. Wells, aged 63 years, one of the best known and respected
citizens of Newark, dropped dead this afternoon at one-forty-five o'clock,
when he attempted to enter the Larkin grocery at Union and Hancock streets.
It is presumed that heart trouble was the cause.

Baxler's ambulence was called and removed the body to his home at 395
Sixteenth Street.

W.C, Wells was born in Lancaster, Ohio, and was the son of Jonas Wells, a
leading tailor of that place. As W.C.Wells attained manhood he entered an
apprenticeship under his father and learned the tailoring trade, which he
followed for many years being connected at the close of his active business
life as a merchant with Charles R. Shields of this city, now a resident of
and a banker in Columbus. When but eighteen years of age he went to
Columbus, where he remained for a short time, thence came to Newark, where
he was employed as a journeyman tailor, and in 1876 established himself in
business for himself here. In 1902 he retired from the merchant tailoring
business to take up the management of Buckeye Lake Park. His time was thus
spent for two years, after which he retired in order to give his undivided
time to the supervision of his real estate interests in Newark which, in
the meantime, had become extensive and important. In connection with W.E.
Miller, he platted Park addition west of the city. His carefully
controlled real estate interests brought him substational return. In his
political views he was a Democrat and as such was elected to the board of
education on which he served for six years, four years of that time being
the president of the board, and for the other two years was treasurer of
it. He was also secretary of the board of trade here for a number of years
and was always building up the city, and was an important factor in all
public movements. For many years he has been recognized as one of the
foremost citizens of Newark whose cooperation could be counted upon for any
movement for the public good. He was a member of the Elks and active as
one of the promoters of its interests.

He was united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Hempsted, and to them were born
seven children, six of whom are still living to mourn with the wife and
mother the sudden tragedy that has come into their family life in the
sudden calling of the husband and father. The children, surviving, are
Charles H., present city engineer; William C., Jr., of Cincinnati; George
B., Sidney E., Richard E., and Henry E.

In the passing of W.C. Wells many friends will mourn thier loss.

A second article, on page two of the paper. I do not have the date. This
is probably from the next day.

educated in Lancaster and had made Newark his home for 44 years.

He was identified with every project to bringing new industries to Newark
and was always very successful in promoting plans for the benefit of the
city. He with William E. Miller, platted the Park addition at the time the
Jewett Car company was brought to Newark for the purpose of raising money
