He had one foot injured when he was holding a stick of wood for Joe Sharp to split; His toes were cut off, infection resulted, and his leg was amputated below the knee; he wore an artificial wooden or cork leg the rest of his life. He began working as a telegraph operator for the L&N RR Co. and was depot agent at Cornersville, TN when he died.

He was very popular with me. He worked for Leonard Bros., in Ft. Worth, as the cashier in a cage for many years. It was exciting to visit him and watch him rapidly count out the 'cash' to waiting customers. However the temptation grew too strong for him over the years. He wished to have some of the 'cash' for himself. Eventually, he was caught. Carl was such a good and well loved, long time employee, that the company would not prosecute him, nor even fire him. So, the Company moved him to California. Parents: George Darr CULPS and Effie May HALL.

But he was greatly loved, because he was a 'toucher'. He would wrestle we kids until we cried 'calf-rope', as my grandmother described it.

First, aunt Lois died in the nursing home, after a stroke. Claude nursed her like a baby. For 4 years he cared for her, every day going to the nursing home to hand feed his beloved wife.

Emphysema got the best of him. Nancy, his daughter broke his heart because she didn't seem to 'care'. Life lost all meaning for him...he took a gun to end his. Parents: George Darr CULPS and Effie May HALL.

bullet Francis B. CULPS was born in 1857. Julia Culps Smith of Birmingham, AL sent me some material showing 7 members of the Wm. Augustis (or as her records reflected, Geo. Washington Culps) family. Her records and mine agree except she has a listing for 'sis' who always went by that nickname. She never married; lived in Giles Co., TN. My records reflect a Francis B. Culps taken from the 1870 Census. The spelling seems to indicate a male, but possibly not, but this may be 'sis'. Parents: William Augustis (Arthur) CULPS and Ann Elizabeth (Eliza) KING.

bullet Frank (Freddie) (Augustas) CULPS was born on JUL 20 1895 in Elkmont Springs, Giles Co., TN. He was buried in 1987 in Athens, Alabama, Roselawn. He died on NOV 18 1987 in Athens, Alabama. He worked over 40 years for L&NRR Co. and lived at 205 E. Pryor St. in Athens, Alabama until his wife's death. He lived with a daughter at 908 18th Avenue,.NW, Birmingham, Al. 35215, until his wife's death.

His mother and sister, Alice said his full name was Freddie Frank; other family members said it was Frank Augustas; becasue of the disagreement, he dropped other names and has gone only by Frank. Parents: William Anthony CULPS and Hettie Ann SHARP.

He was married to Virda Lee WRAY on JUN 13 1915. Children were: Julia Gray CULPS.

bullet George Darr CULPS Photo was born on FEB 27 1868 in Elkmont Springs, Giles Co., TN. He died on MAR 26 1922 in Texas. This man was my grand-father.

His middle name was different from 'Darr' when he was named. He later changed it but I cannot remember what my father said was his original name. Both he and his first son, Dewey, my father had the same birthdate, February 27.

He was killed in a railroad accident. Not only was he a farmer but a rail- road carpenter. His job was that of building railroad cars without the help of hammer and nails. He was very skilled at using a hand-ax. He cut and formed rail-road ties as well...all with the ax.

He was carrying his tool box, slipped and fell (down an embankment?) onto the tool box causing an injury from which he was not to recover. He died in the same year, 1922, that I was born. He was 54 years old, the same age as as my grand-father Landry, when he died. Parents: Robert Lewis CULPS and Mary Jane BOYD McClinton.

bullet George Dewey CULPS Photo was born on FEB 27 1899 in Cedar Hill, Dallas Co., TX. He died on MAR 25 1988 in Jacinto City, At home. He was buried on MAR 28 1988 in Houston, Harris Co., TX, San Jacinto. !This was my father, a very dedicated family man. Not overly affectionate but a good man, with a good name. Wherever he was, at work, play, business, neighborhood, or civil community, Dewey was respected by both young and old. He worked hard and did whatever was necessary to provide for us. He worked from Texas to Florida to Arizonia to Wisconsin and points in-between to earn us a living. He was every thing from a builder of generating dams to smoke-stacks, to comon labororer, to labor foreman, carpenter foreman, job superintendent, project manager, a partner in home construction, a saw filer and circuler delivery boy during the depression.

He was a Mason of the highest order, and suporter of the Eastern Star with mother. He was generous and caring. He could always give you an answer, of some kind, with every question asked him. He loved the outdoors, camping fishing, travel, boating (25' Cris-Craft), astronomy, and navigation. He liked his 'toys', first to get TV, then a C.B. car radio, a phone in every room, a Cadillac, Super Sport Empala, Champion Motor home and Dodge camper, He built a fishing camp with a covered fishing pier. He mowed his grass from the top of a ridin' mower.

In 1918 (19 years old) he enlisted as a Private and was in the Student Army Training Corps for officers at Decatur Baptist College, for 3 months.

He died at home, a place that was his for 45 years. This was where he wanted to be. He did not want any life support systems attached to his body. He wanted to see Nona....He died when he was 89 years and one month of age. Parents: George Darr CULPS and Effie May HALL.

He was married to Nona Delma Nonie LANDRY on JUL 11 1921 in Pt.Arthur, Jefferson Co., TX. Children were: Wallace Douglas CULPS, Vernon Claud Burnie CULPS, Una Elaine CULPS.

Notes from Julia Culps Smith indicate that he had 5 children, two boys and three girls; Sterling, Earl, Tony, Merica and Molly.

A letter from Rosa Wright, dated June 11, 1984 included the names of 8 children of Henry and Mary.

Henry talked to Early about the War. He had to help hide the stock from the 'bush whackers' and had to make a livfing for his mother by working on a farm nearby. This farm was near Morrell Mills on the Elk river - that is the Culps farm. Henry almost went over the dam in a boat that was loaded with corn, when he looked back at someone who called him.

On the 1870 Census Henry (15) is listed as a farm laborer.

Limestone Co. sent Rosa photo copies of the payment record by township and Section. She had the exact description, which she obtained from a deed. Henry B. was listed as paying taxes in 1894 on land Mary inherited from her mother. The next year the payments were in her name. Parents: William Augustis (Arthur) CULPS and Ann Elizabeth (Eliza) KING.
