Notes for J
OHN WESLEY MELTON:
John Wesley was a traveling salesman and was not home that often. In the early 1900's, John's wife, Helen Hiter Melton used their home as a boarding house. The fee per day was $1.00, this was a large 14 room home with lots of land that overlooked the mountains and had an attched livery.

**********************************************************************************

Although not much was known about John Wesley, below is a story written by Mary Willis Norman to Helen St. Clair (Aunt Dixie) Melton -- to help YuLee Ruff Larner, Mrs. Norman sent this letter telling some things that she remembered about John Wesley.

John Wesley Melton as I remember Him
" When I was about 6 yrs of age my father met with a young man whom he liked very much. He wanted him to come live with him. It was Mr. Melton. He came and lived with him for a number of years. I was his pet. He called me his little sweetheart, said when I got big enough he was going to marry me. I just couldn't wait for the time to come. Thought he really meant it. I remember one time when my mother refused to let me go fishing in the branch with brother Harry because he had a colored boy with him. I took sister Hattie and slipped off. When I came back Mr. Melton was building the carriage house. He called from the top and said 'Little Sweetheart, I am sorry for you; I wish I could tale the whipping you are to get' I appreciated it and never forgot it. He was very ingenuous. On rainy days we children would go up to his room to be entertained. He would take paste board and make a little boy, wire him to his stove pipe and when the fire was made he would dance. We thought it wonderful.
He played well on the violin, I soon begun to accompliment him on the piano, as I was full of music and played by ear before I had taken any lessons. I now play some of his old pieces and think of those happy days when I played with him. My father built Lignum store and had him clerk there. On Sundays when he came to be with us at my old home at Inglewood, two miles from Lignum, he would bring me candy, big round wheels of pepermint. My what a treat! I remember his bringing the first chewing gum, I ever saw. I was in a little tin box, white wax sweetened. That was quite a treat. I also remember a big Albemarle pippin he brought me from his home. How little gifts do impress children. There was a temperance lodge formed at Lignum and I wished to be old enough to go with the girls and boys. Then he fell in love with a Miss Hiter, and soon they were married. That was the most unkindest cut of all. My father had a home built for him near Lignum. I enjoyed going to see them but was always a little jealous of her. Time went on, I grew up and married also. Several years after my marriage Mr. Melton came to see us, he spent the night, and how glad I was to see him and talk over old times. That was the last time I ever saw him. A grand man! Mrs. J.H. Willis told me you wanted to know where Mr. Melton was born. I only know he came to us from Green County."

So from this letter/story
They (John Wesley and Helen Hiter) lived in the house that was built for them by Mr. Willis at Lignum. They lived there for seven years and three of their children were born there ; Hiter Dawson, Sarah Daniel, John Wesley, Jr. (Jack or Wick) They then moved to Greenville, Virginia -- Helen was three months pregnant with her fourth child, Helen St. Clair (Dixie), and six more of their children were born in Greenville - Cora YuLee (Lee), Richard Young (Dick), Hugh Pemberton, Ivor Lynwood (Tuck), Mary Belle, Edward Blair (Buck)

Notes for H
ELEN LEE HITER:
The following letter was written by the pastor of the church that Mrs. J.W. Melton attended -----
Helen Hiter Melton was born in Louisa County on June 15, 1860 and died at Greenville Virginia -- Augusta County on July 15, 1913. She was Miss Helen Hiter, daughter of William Young Hiter.
When quite a girl she was converted and united with the Baptist Church in her community.
On the 14th of December 1880 she was united in marriage to Mr. J. W. Melton and a more faithful and beautiful union never existed than did between these two married young their early love seemed to grow stronger as the years went by. To this union ten children were born. After her marriage Mrs. Melton with her husband lived for four years at Lignum, Culpepper County, Virginia. Moving from there to Augusta County, Virginia. She transfered her membership from Larl Church Culpepper County to the Baptist Church at Greenville, where she remained a true and faithful member until the time of her death. Early in the year of 1911 she was taken sick. The best medical attention was given her, but human hands and human hearts could not keep her it soon seen that she had been called to higher life and was gradually taking leave earthly things and earthly scenes. On July the 15th 1913, She answered the call of her Master and quietly fell asleep in Jesus. On the afternoon of the next day loving hands laid her body to rest in the little cemetery near the church, she loved so well. The very large number attending her funeral and the beautiful floral designs told in part the high esteem in which she was held by all who knew her. Mrs. Melton left to mourn her departure a faithful and devoted husband - Mr. John W. Melton and ten children, six boys, Hiter, John , Richard, Hugh, Ivor, and Blair (**Edward Blair**) ans four daughters, Sarah, Helen, YuLee, and Mary Belle. Also Four sisters, Miss Pemmie, Mrs. EmmaHumphries, Mrs. Sallie Baker, and Mrs. Ella Strain, and three brothers, Peter, Charlie, and Jim Hiter, and a host of friends and relatives.
I tell in a few words the noble qualities of such a life as her's would be impossible. The writer of this sketch was her pastor for two years and during that timelived in her home and it is his honest conviction that he never knew a better person. She was gentle in manner, kind and unselfish in disposition strong in her convictions and true to every trust imposed upon her. As a wife, mother, there was none better, as a friend she was true, as a christian, she was faithful to her church, loyal to her pastor and devoted to her Lord. Her's was the kind of life that makes people better, makes the world brighter, and wqins people to the religion of Jesus. Truly it may be said "To know her was to love her!."
What a noble heritage she has left to those behind her. O how happy hor her must have been the meeting with those Saints gone on before. She had wrought well here and for her, death was but the Master's call to come up higher. As we think of her now ther comes the sweet consciousness that she is - - -
"Safe in the arms of Jesus, Safe on his gentle breast, there by his love o'er shade, Sweetly her soul doth rest."

Another Letter written by A FRIEND- - -
      Mrs. Helen Hiter Melton
On July 15,1913, after a long illness, death came to Mrs. Helen Hiter Melton, wife of Mr. J.W. Melton, of Greenville, VA. Mrs. Melton was born on July 15,1860, in Louisa County and was granddaughter of Rev. William Y. Hiter. She was married December 14,1880, and was the mother of ten children - - four daughters and six sons - - all of whom were present at her funeral. Besides these, she leaves a husband, four sisters, two brothers, many relatives and a host of friens to mourn their loss. Her funeral was conducted from the Baptist Church, July 16th in the presence of a large congreation of friends and relatives. She had been a member of this church for nearly twenty-six years and had seen all her chilren but one become members of the chirch of her choice, the last time she attended church was June 8th to see her youngest boy (Edward Blair) baptized. Her pastor spoke at her funeral tenderly of her strong Christian character as a kind neighbor, attentive, self-sacrificing, and loving wife and mother as a sincere generous and consecrated Christian. May the Lord bless her influences and comfort the hearts of those who mourn her.
