AMES CLAY RUFF:
James Ruff died in a tragic accident.
(article that appeared in the Staunton Evening Leader Newspaper, on Thursday, June 17,1935)
SERVICES FOR CITY MANAGER RUFF FRIDAY
Staunton was stunned last night when it became known its thirty-eight year old popular and efficient city manager had been fatally injured during a city softball league game on the grounds of the Virginia School for the deaf and blind. He was struck over the heart by a baseball bat which slipped from the hands of another player.
The tragic accident happened about seven o'clock when a bat slipped out of the hands of Remel Gayhart and struck Mr. Ruff while he was standing about fifteen feet from the batter's plate, while waiting his turn at bat, during a game between Rotary-Kiwanis, with whom he was playing, and the Sinclair Gass Company. He was a Rotartian, and would have taken office next week as director of the club.
He was pronounced dead by City Coroner T. M. Parkins at eight-twenty, after E. R. Young, Y. M. C. A. physical director, and the local fire department's life saving squad had worked over him for nearly an hour and a half.
EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT
According to an eye-witness, Mr. Ruff was standing about fifteen feet from the batter's plate waiting his turn at bat, when Gayhart swung hard at a pitch. The bat slippe out of his hands, hit W. L. Overdorf, Jr. a glancing blow, and the end of the missle struck Mr. Ruff over the heart, causing almost instantaneous death.
He drew up his hands, uttered a low cry, and reeled. He was caught by bystanders and laid on the grass, and artificial respiration was immediately begun by Young. The fire department's squad arrived in about ten minutes and used their respirator and continued the artificial respirtation until Dr. Parkins declared him dead at eight-twenty.
Dr. Kenneth Bradford arrived at about the time the fire company, and assisted with the work. He said afterward that the blow probably ruptured a blood vessel leading out of his heart, which would account for the fact that witnesses reported that he breathed for several minutes after his pulse stopped.
Dr. Parkins' vertict was that he came to his death "As a result of being accidentlly struck over the heart with a baseball bat"

Tribute from Mayor
Mayor William A. Grubert, who was with Mr. Ruff at Gypsy Hill park a short time before the accident occurred, said that the accident came as a "distinct shock" and that the city of Staunton had lost "a most excellent, capable, and efficient city manager"
Mr. Grubert also said that all activities of the city hall would besuspended until after the funeral.
Mr. Ruff became permanent city manager last July, but had served as acting manager for several months before that. Before becoming city manager, he had been employed by the city for about nine years, seven as superintendent of the maintenance department.
He became temporary manager May 1, 1934 upon Willard F. Day's resignation to become Herico county's first manager.

Graduate of V.P.I.
Mr. Ruff was a graduate of V.P.I. and also attended Bridgewater college. During the war he served in the sixteenth aero construction company. He was overseas from Aug. 8, 1918, until April 14,1919.
He was the son of the late James Harvey and Frances Messessmith Ruff, of Sangersville. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Mary Bell Melton, of Greenville, two young daugthers, Eull and Betty Lane; two sisters, one a twin Mrs. Cyrus Kiracofe of Grattis, O. and Mrs. Home Miller, Akron,O. two brothers, Charles and John of Sangersville.
