Letter / Notes written by Joseph P. Campbell -- remarks at Memorial Service for E. B. "Buck" Melton
Before you is an "empty vessel"
The soul that once filled it is the "offspring of God"
(and has returned to the Father)
It is to this "Soul personality" that we have gathered to
pay tribute.
Our tribute need only be our gathering ... for his life
speaks for itself.
The community loves him, his family loves him, children
love him and animals love him. (and he loved each in return)
Many of us know how he enjoyed watching birds from his
familiar place on the "front porch"
The community can continue to give it's love to Buck through
his family. (They need the comfort of our good right arm)
We must now center our thoughts on the living ... for they must
still hear only the "voices of man" .. must continue to hear
only "mortal music" and see only "earthly sights"
His Friend and Pastor
Joseph P. Campbell

Edward was the youngest of ten children born to John Wesley and Helen Lee Hiter. He worked as a mail clerk on the C&O railroad. Mail was sorted on the train. Large sacks of mail were loaded into the mail cars and the employees stood and sorted letters, pitching them into the appropriate slots and bins. His "run" was from Washington, D.C. to Hinton, West Virginia. He rented a room in both places, and would "lay over" for a couple of days before making the return trip.

"This information came from YuLee Ruff Larner -- in a brief book she compiled for family members in December 2000"
