38. Mordicai Bennett was born in 1814 in Kentucky. He has reference number AUD42616. After reviewing the 1880 census you attached and I compared it to the Mississippi 1900 census, Randolph and Robbs Precincts I have, I'm inclined to think that Mordicy and Jane Bennett are the parents of Bettie (Bennett) Griffin. Also, my 1880 census lists that Jane Bennett had an illness called "Flux". The dictionary gives several meanings such as a mental or medical disorder. Also interesting, Bettie and Ella are both 34 years of age......could be twins.

The 1880 census shows Mordicy Bennett being born in Kentucky. On the 1900 census, Bettie's (Lenuis is her name on the 1900 census) father is listed as being born in Kentucky. Mattie and Porter are the only two children living in the household.

I met with Note Lure (Phillips) Caldwell, a granddaughter to Bettie (Bennett) Griffin, daughter of Virginia E. (Griffin) and James W. Phillips, a remarkable woman. She was so helpful with my Lee research and did tell me a little about her family. While I have not documented any of the following, these are notes from our conversations.

Her grandmother was know as Linda Wade Elizabeth Bennett, nickname " Bettie". Her grandmother told the story of leaving Tuscaloosa, Alabama in a wagon, to come to Mississippi. They lived in Old Robbs and moved from there to Popular Springs, in wagons, so the boys could go to school. In Popular Springs, MS, they built a dormitory and rented the rooms out.

Jessie Griffin died ca. 1907 or 1908, did not say where. She did say that Bettie was buried in Florence, AL.
She did not say when or where.

I do have documented death dates for Mattie's sister, Virginia (Virgie Griffin) Phillips and James Walter Phillips. If you don't have these, let me know and I'll send the photo of the head stone.
