EIGHTH GENERATION
192. Joseph Ames
was born on Jun 10 1738 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut. He died on
Dec 7 1831 in Shaftsbury, Bennington, Vermont. He LDS Number in 8J4G-OP. He
has reference number AUD20561. in 1786, it is reported that Martin took the
Freeman's Oath in Shoreham, Addison County, VT (see Reference Listing, #14),
and he appears as a resident there in 1790 (see Reference Listing, #26). On September
3, 1791, he purchased 100 acres of land from Joseph Ames for 25 pounds (lot 70,
1st. Division). His daughter Lois is believed to have married Joseph Ames' son
William in 1789, and the meager amount charged for a land purchase of this size,
makes for some interesting speculation. For example, on January 1, 1788, this
same Joseph Ames sold 50 acres of land to another of his sons (Elijah) for a
total of 30 pounds. Why this obvious favoritism in the price of land shown to
Martin? Wilma DeCourcey speculates that this could have been a payment-in-kind
for a marriage arrangement between William Ames and Lois Armstrong in order to
provide a home for William's young bastard son Barnabus born in 1788 (see Reference
Listing, #17).

Abner Ames, b. Mansfield, CT, 16 Dec. 1766, and d. Orwell, VT, 17 Sept. 1833,
was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Parker Ames. Elizabeth and my ancestor, Keziah
Parker Cutting (Mrs. David Cutting), were sisters.
Abner wrote a letter entitled, "A letter addressed to the Baptist Church
in Orwell, in which is brought to view their conduct as a body, and as individuals,
in an extraordinary line of persecution, towards the author, for many years,
in connection with Pliny Smith, Esq. and others." Printed for the author,
Rutland, VT, 1823. It is 78 pp. long. There is a copy of this at the American
Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE THERE ARE OTHER COPIES OF THIS? Abner and his uncle,
David Cutting, were both in trouble with the Orwell Baptist Church and I would
like to be able to read a copy of Abner's letter to see what he has to say, but
especially to see if he says anything about David Cutting.
