Hello David;
Have you seen..
http://history.cc.ukans.edu/heritage/cousin/ames.html
We have common ancestors through gen 7 on your list.
I'm looking for anything related to "William's" (B1605) arrival in
America.
Also, I have the following set of notes taken by an Aunt who visted Bruton in
~1969...
Following is from a "Christmas letter" written by Mellie (Ames) Masterson
in (approximately) 1969. Mellie and Earl had been living in the UK as a result
of his job at Honeywell. I recently (Jan. 1998) received a copy of this letter
that was "found" by my mother, Hannah (Davidson) Ames.
"We drove on to Bruton, Somerset where I had learned the Ames family lived
before emigrating to America. Shortly after entering the town of Bruton we came
upon the Church of St. Mary the Virgin and decided that a good place to start
poking about was in the cemetery surrounding the church. We walked about but
couldn't (find) a stone with the name 'Ames' on it. Finally we went inside the
church were (where) there are many brass placques on the walls and floor. Earl
and I took off in different directions looking about and reading the inscriptions.
I had gone to my left after entering so I was almost back where I started when
I read the inscription on a three panel stained glass window to the right of
the entry. It reads.
'To the Glory of God and in Memory of John and William Ames who emigrated to
America from Bruton in 1635 and 1638. Erected by Frederick Lothrop Ames of Easton,
Mass. 1888."
Under the panels is the wording Exodus XII-37, XIV-21, and XV-20. I leave it
to you to look then up. The Ames coat of arms is in the center small lower panel.
I came across the Ames coat of arms in Boston last summer along with the family
motto FAMA CADIA ROSA DULCIOR translated to Fair fame is sweeter than a rose."

Hi Don,
I'm rather new at this so excuse me if if doesn't work quite right at first.
I recently (1997) returned from assignment in England, where I visited the church
at Bruton, Somerset in search for my ancestor William Ames. William and John,
his brother, emirgrated from Bruton in 1635 & 1638 respectively. They also
built the Pear Tree Cottage at Wyke Champflower, just outside of Bruton. The
cottage was built in 1633 and has that date carved into a log over the fireplace
in the main part of the house. It is a beautiful little cottage, which has been
modernized somewhat, but is now listed on the British Historical registry. It
is owned by a retired couple whom are very used to the Ames' coming by to visit
and sightsee. They gave me a deed which mentions several Ames' in it, but it
is in olde English and I can't read it. My mother has done quite a bit of genealogy
on the Ames' and I intend to continue that work now that I am retired. Once I
get organized I will send more information, or if anyone has any thing to add
to what I have said, I would be interested in hearing of it.
By the way I have pictures of both the cottage and the window in the church.

Our William was born in 1605 in Bruton, came to America aboard the "Hurcules"
in 1635 settled in Braintree, Massachusetts married Hannah, had one son John,
who was adopted by his Uncle John who was living in Bridgewater, Massachusetts
and was childless, young John inhereted his uncles land and started one branch
of the Ames family in North America. I haven't followed up on the Joan (Snelling)
Ames branch but assume they were descendants of Rev. William Ames 1576-1633.
I recall his family as being from Ipswich.
According to a book written by Faber K. Ames, who quotes liberally from a book
written by Winthrop Ames in 1937, the Ames brother's, John and William, "probably"
were drawn to America by the prospects of better economic freedom and also religious
freedom. He states: "William 1st and John 4th were drawn to America by the
promise of better prospects, and their religion must have been an equal, if not
a more powerful motive. They were undoubtedly "dissenters" and considered
the form and ceremony of the established English church a Popish inheritance
and contrary to the teachings of the Bible. Most of those who left England at
this time came to Virginia, Maryland, or the West Indies, for land more fertile,
life easier, and it mattered little what faith a man held. William 1st and John
4th chose cold and bare Massachujsetts for only those of the Puritan faith were
welcome." This would suggest that they could have been Puritans.
Winthrop also states that unemployment was extremely high under Edward III. Edward
then imported weavers and planters to teach the English how to weave clothe.
The area around Bruton is good sheep country. In 1533, Henry VII commissioned
a John Leland as 'King's Antiquary' to travel around the country and record his
observations. Leland visited the town of Bruton during the lifetime of the first
John Ames, and recorded; "all the town now standeth by the making of clothe".
Winthrop speculates that the Ames' could have been clothe weavers with open air
farming as a secondary occupation. Of course, nobody really knows.
