ELEVENTH GENERATION

2000. George Caspar Schleicher was born about 1676 in Am Albuch, Duchy of Wurttenberg. He died in Friedelshausen, Sachs-meiningen, Thuringia, Germany. He has reference number 7941. Like you I was interested in the origin of the name Sligar/er

Our Sligar's had their names spelled in the following ways:

Sleikew - 1843 West Virginia marriage record
Sliker- 1850 West Virginia census & 1856 Wheeling City Directory
Sliger - 1860, 1880 & 1920 West Virginia census
Schleicher- 1867 West Virginia daughter's marriage record
Slager - 1870, 1900, 1910 & 1920 West Virginia census
Sliggar/Sligger - 1876 West Virginia daughter's marriage record
Schleichart - 1888 West Virginia land record
Sligar - 1900 & 1910 West Virginia census
Schlager - 1920 California census

I talked with a number of German speaking genealogists have looked at
Ernest Frederick Sligar's 1876 signature. They were also shown the
variations of spellings and told the present spelling and pronunciation
of the name. Their best guess as to the actual original name is
Schleicher. The pronunciation of the letters "ch, k, w, and g ", by a
German to a non German speaker, could all sound similar, hence the
variations in spellings on documents.

Hans Bahlow's "Deutsches Namenlexikon", a German dictionary of names,
lists the name Schleicher and some of it's variations: Schleich, Sliche,
Slicher, Schlieker, and Schliecker, were common to many parts of Germany
(Bremen, Mainz, Bamburg, Wurtenburg, and Munich) and these names began
to appear in written documents as early as 1147. (There was no Sligar/er
listing)

Sligar has been found spelled a variety of different ways on documents:

Slyger/Sleyger - John Slyger and John Henry Sleyger were the 1st
Sligars who arrived, 5 Oct 1737, aboard the ship, Townsend from
Amsterdam.

Sliger - Hans Otto, Georick, Jo, Jo Georick, and Henrick Sliger arrived
on the ship Queen Eliz, 16 Sept 1738. This was the spelling of their
names by the ship's crew. These German Palatines wrote their names Hans
Otto, Georg Casper, Johann Jost, Johann Georg SchlÖcher, and Henrich
Schleucher. Some descendents of this group of Sligars settled in
Kentucky and Tennessee.

Schlieder - 1841 New York intent oath.

Last year I found my Sligar in German immigation records. The German
spelling was Schleicher, so several German names could have sounded like
Sligar/er to those who wrote the records.

I hope this helps. I'm sending this to the list as others might find my
research into the origins of the name interesting.

Hello,
I am a new member to this list and am a Sliger descendant through John Sliger and Cathrina Tyler's daughter Catherine, who married Philip Brown, son of Johan Jacob Braun and Elizabeth Goettgen. My question is regarding the wife of Georg Caspar Schleicher. I have, for years, had her name as Anna Herrsch, daughter of Adam Herrsch and Anna Funk. Just recently I have seen his wife as Anna Margaretha Heurich, daughter of Martin Heurich. Does anyone have proof of one or the other? I would love to know which one is correct, if anyone can settle this I would be indebted to you.
