Worsham & Washam Family History

"Nothing is more compelling than a true story and writing a family history creates a permanent memory for family and friends."

We are pleased to let all those who have contributed to the Worsham - Washam Family History know that the manuscript is now complete. We say that hesitantly, since no family history is ever complete. We still have many unlinked families, however, it is time to share our findings and collections with others. The book will cover the time span of about 1640 to about 1900 with some families going forward to more recent years. Rooted in England, the limbs of this immigrant family tree spread across much of the American continent.

The first to migrate to the new country was William Worsnam (Worsham) who originally bought 200 acres in Henrico County, Virginia in 1640. George Worsham, probably William's brother, also settled in Virginia. Twelve years laterIndiana 1652, William and George Worsnam (Worsham) purchased 200 acres in Henrico County, Virginia along the Appomattox River at the mouth of Old Town Creek and extended north and east toward Swift Creek. Their early descendant's predominately lived in Henrico, Charles City, Prince Edward, Amelia and Chesterfield Counties of Virginia.

We have focused on the descendants of William and George Worsnam (Worsham). This book traces over 2000 direct descendants of William Worsham and over 300 descendants of George Worsham. Beginning in the earliest days of American history with several influential Virginia families, their history proceeds to soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War. We have also included details of those descendants who served and fought in the War of 1812, the Civil War and even includes a wild west hanging.

Wiley was born in 1799 in North Carolina, probably in Rowan County. His family emigrated to Georgia about 1792. This was in Hancock County, Georgia by 1796 and in Jones County, Georgia before 1820. The John Buckner estate disposed of land in Dooley County, Georgia, however, at this time there is no evdience that they lived there. Wiley was in Talbot County, Georgia by 1840 and died there in 1866.
There is some conflict in naming the ancestor spouse of Wiley. There is an account by John K. McEwen (probably written about 1930) which gives Wiley’s wife as Miss Strauder. Another document credits an uninterrupted sequence of children, including Tabitha Jane Buckner, to Wiley and Judith Handley. The birth pattern does not suggest two marriages.
Wiley must have married about 1801, at which time he was residing in Georgia. Strauder families are not found in Georgia. There were and are Strawther families in Hancock and Monroe counties of Georgia. Handley families are found in Madison, Decatur, Fayette, and Troup counties of Georgia. It is possible that Judith Handley has had a previous marriage and is Miss Strauder. Children were:
