GRIFFIN, J. W. - PATTON, VIRGINIA E. 17 Feb 1834 Claiborne MS
A large number of the descendents of William Griffin, b. 1740, VA, d.1800, Pendleton
Dist., SC, migrated to Alabama in the early 1800's, most settled in Benton [Calhoun]
County, St. Clair and Tuscaloosa Counties. There is an Alonzo Griffin, b. 1850,
Calhoun County, AL, son of Barton Griffin and Jane Reid. I have not traced the
family any further than Barton's children so I do not know if there is a connection.
If you believe it is possible there is substantial data available on this leg
of the Griffin family. Much of this is published in the RootsWeb's WorldConnect
Project: Griffin and Griffith et al, by Waymon Griffin <griway@@bellsouth.net>.
There is no source data but it can be a good tool to help find possible connections.

This is a small booklet written by Miss Jessie Pierce of Smithville in 1958.
It has so many names of the early settlers of Monroe Co and Itawamba Co MS and
is so interesting that I will try to type it in as I can. I hope that someone
will find the person they are searching for in it.
"By request of my nieces and nephew I will try to give them all the information
I can and the early history of Smithville and surrounding country. Of course
it is all tradition and legendary and old folk tales of the pioneers.
You are all familiar with the Gaines Trace over which all of the early settlers
came. In my contact with Dr W A Evans of Aberdeen while he ws writing the history
of Monroe County, he said that Frederick Weaver was the first white man to settle
in what is now Monroe county. I have an old piece of walnut furniture his son,
Jesse Weaver, brought up from Mobile in the early steamboat days on the Tombigbee.
He is buried some miles northeast of Turon Church at what was once his home but
now is the most lonely place imaginable.
I have no history prior to 1818, the year my grandmother was born. As soon as
legal land titles were available, her father owned and sold the property to a
man named Greenwood, from which the Springs took their name-hence Greenwood Springs.
There were only two families in what is now Monroe County. This Trace Road ran
ina southwesterly direction. Somewhere in the old New Hope Cemetary Community
Luke Stanifer, the Walls, and Nabors settled. A trail leading came in at Brooks
Store from there and ran westward. It was called Trace Road. Back south from
Brook's Store, the families that lived along this trace, but not all at the same
time, were the lockridges, Malones, McCommons, Bloodworths, Richbon, and Hedgepeths.
Now to get nearer home. The Pierce, Perkins, Bennetts, Nashes, Shannons, and
Griffins came in. They were the ancestors of the late Bob Christian and Willard
Griffin. They pushed on and forded Bull Mountain and made a crop on what later
became the Jim Harrison farm at Tilden. It was then an open prairie. Great grand-dad,
William Pierce, settled just south of Mr Cowart's on the bank of the creek. His
sons were Aaron, William, Joseph, John, and Ebenezer. His daughters were Ruth,
Malinda, Mary Jane and Minerva. His sons as soon as they could get legal titles
entered and owned all of the land in that neighborhood. Less than 80 years ago
there was but one dwelling in the 360 acres. Now there are 15 nice homes on that
property. Dr Evans said in the early days there was no other church but Primitive
Baptist. The lane leading south of the Ida Price home went to a churhc near the
creek, and Old Pierce Cemetary was started for a church cemetary. The Moore families
great grandmother, Ruth Pierce, was the first to be buried there.
My great grand-dad settled on what is now a highway leading to Detroit (Alabama)
just above Splunge Creek bridge. The place took on the name of Jonesboro. I never
knew why, they met regularly here for military practice. They were called muster
days. William Pierce was the drummer for these occations. He was almost equal
to The Deerslayer in J F Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales. He was credited with
killing 2700 deer in Monroe, Itawamba, and Tishomingo counties.
Great-grand dad Perkins always boasted of his Sir John Wolf and Indian Princess
Pocahontas blood. His wife's maiden name was Sally McManum of Virginia. She was
the widow Marsh, with a little girl, Betsy Marsh. Besides this stepdaughter,
his daughters were Jane, Isobel, Polly, Laney, and Martha. His sons were William,
Perry, Larkin, and Robert. Uncle Perry was a doctor; William an iron worker,
and Uncle Larkin was a fiddling farmer. They are all buried in Oktibbeha County.
After the treaty with the Indians, Grandsire Jim as he was called, was appointed
by the government to go as guide and interpreter with the Indians. He spent three
years in Indian territory. Throught the Bureau of Archives and History I trace
my two great grandfathers back to Browns Creek, Anson County North Carolina.
William Pierce's wife was James Perkins sister so we had the distinction of having
a great aunt for a great-grandmother. Aaron Pierce and Robert Perkins were first
cousins. They were born in 1814 in Giles County Tennessee. My grand dad Robert
Perkins served with the surveying party in surveying out the counties and districts."
1840 Monroe Co Census A-C
Griffin, Benjamin
Griffin, Francis
I am particularly interested in Benjamin Griffin who was there as early as 1840
and a James Griffin who married and divorced Rachel German. I found the divorce
published in the Columbus Democrat, but my trip to Monroe Co. in the summer of
1999 did not yield any results. I could not find any index books in the Clerk's
office and the ladies there did not know of any. My husband and I were allowed
to go down to the basement where we dug through packets in drawers, but no luck.
I have just found the Monroe page here and all your wonderful work. Thank you
so much for going through the packets and for posting the census information.
I am sure I will find a lot of useful information since two lines of my family
went through Monroe Co. on their trek West.
GRIFFIN, GERMAN
Seeking information about a Monroe County marriage between James Griffin and
Rachel German. According to page 73 of "White Marriage Records 1834-1850",
they were married Oct 15 1835. But Book I, Wills & Marriage Records 1836-1851,
indicates they were married Oct. 3, 1834. The Feb. 24, 1838 issue of the Columbus
Democrat posted a notice that Bill of Divorce was granted to Rachael Griffin
vs. James Griffin. Does anyone have information about this couple or willing
to look it up? I am trying to prove or eliminate these people as my gggrandparents.
Thank you!

Seeking information on BENJAMIN GRIFFIN and JAMES GRIFFIN who were in Monroe
County approx. 1840-1845. James married Rachel German, but they divorced shortly
afterward. Benjamin obtained a land patent in Itawamba Co. MS in 1844, and the
land patent was made out to "Benjamin Jefferson Griffin of Monroe County,
Mississippi." I do not know if James and Benjamin were related, but would
like to correspond with anyone with information on the Griffin or German family
in Monroe County, later Chickasaw County, and finally Itawamba Co. Mississippi.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------
My gg grandmother, Rachel Griffin, lived in Calhoun Co. from approx. 1847 - 1855.
In the beginning, this area was Chickasaw Co. but it became Calhoun Co in 1852
when the counties were divided. She lived in the SE corner of the county on the
Chickasaw and Webster Co. lines. The land patent was in the name of John Griffin,
whom I believe to be her husband. John was not shown on the 1850 census, so it
is believed he died between 1847-1850. Rachel's children were: Benjamin Jefferson,
John A., James C., Nancy J., Rachel Elizabeth and Archibald. Other children may
have been Daniel Jackson and Jesse. Jesse Griffin married Rebecca Arrendale who
were neighbors of Rachel Griffin in Calhoun Co. Archibald was my great-grandfather.
Rachel and kids moved to Itawamba Co. between 1855-1860. I do not know Rachel's
date or place of death, but it was sometime after 1860.
There is a James Griffin listed on the 1850 mortality index of Chickasaw Co.
MS. Since part of Chickasaw Co. became Calhoun County, some think this James
Griffin was Rachel's husband. I tend to believe it was John because of the land
patent.
Archibald married Frances Adaline Hancock in Itawamba Co. and moved his family
to Polk Co. AR about 1870.
Do these names connect to anyone out there?

19. Betty Linda Wade Elizabeth

Alabama. She has reference number 84. COLE, BENNETT Info on Sebron Joseph
Cole (died 1950's), wife: Emily Josephine Bennett (died 1935); Her father was
John Bennett married to Harriette Bennett. Lived in Itawamba or Monroe County.
Am trying to locate Conferdate info on John Bennett (i.e. what regiment &
company); pension records; deeds, wills; marriage license. Coles & Bennetts
still live in Amory & Smithville,MS. Any info. helpful
After reviewing the 1880 census you attached and I compared it to the Mississippi
1900 census, Randolph and Robbs Precincts I have, I'm inclined to think that
Mordicy and Jane Bennett are the parents of Bettie (Bennett) Griffin. Also, my
1880 census lists that Jane Bennett had an illness called "Flux". The
dictionary gives several meanings such as a mental or medical disorder. Also
interesting, Bettie and Ella are both 34 years of age......could be twins.
The 1880 census shows Mordicy Bennett being born in Kentucky. On the 1900 census,
Bettie's (Lenuis is her name on the 1900 census) father is listed as being born
in Kentucky. Mattie and Porter are the only two children living in the household.
I met with Note Lure (Phillips) Caldwell, a granddaughter to Bettie (Bennett)
Griffin, daughter of Virginia E. (Griffin) and James W. Phillips, a remarkable
woman. She was so helpful with my Lee research and did tell me a little about
her family. While I have not documented any of the following, these are notes
from our conversations.
Her grandmother was know as Linda Wade Elizabeth Bennett, nickname " Bettie".
Her grandmother told the story of leaving Tuscaloosa, Alabama in a wagon, to
come to Mississippi. They lived in Old Robbs and moved from there to Popular
Springs, in wagons, so the boys could go to school. In Popular Springs, MS, they
built a dormitory and rented the rooms out.
Jessie Griffin died ca. 1907 or 1908, did not say where. She did say that Bettie
was buried in Florence, AL.
She did not say when or where.
I do have documented death dates for Mattie's sister, Virginia (Virgie Griffin)
Phillips and James Walter Phillips. If you don't have these, let me know and
I'll send the photo of the head stone.
