I can barely remember my Grandfather. He used to pick me up and take me to their
house. He would carry my bag. He would let me comb his hair. I can remember
that he was a very gentle person. I still have a comic book he bought me in
1948. I can still feel him holding my hand as we walked.

George L. Ames was born on Nov 5 1923 in St. Louis, Missouri. He died on
Oct 26 1997 in St. Charles, Missouri. He has reference number 101. George
had an eighth grade education. The only one of his siblings to graduate from
the eighth grade.
When George was a young boy, he used to work cleaning the ashes from the ash-pits.
He told the story of rolling his pants legs up so the rats would not crawl up
his legs.
George was drafted for the Second World War when he was 18 years old. He went
into the Army. He was under the command of General Patton. His carpool was
the one that drove General Patton around.
George was hit by shrapnel and it lacerated his lungs. While still bandaged,
he was called to the "Battle of the Bulge".
While fighting in the "Battle of the Bulge", he suffered frozen feet.
George received 2 Purple Hearts and 2 Bronze Medals for Bravery.
George always reminded me of being kind in a childlike way. Always smiling whenever
you were around. He was a special person.
George loved helping and giving to others. He always had a good re pore with
all the children in the family. They all loved Uncle George.
