Hi Audrey,
We have talked before, I think. I am particularly interested in your
Ames line. the one down from LaRue Eugene Ames. You obviously have the
line back to William. Did I send you the data of his marriage to Katie
Guntly and his second marriage to Laura E. Bolding. Are you a descendant
of this line?
I think I told you that I am working on a book of all the
descendants of William. Clearly you have data that is more recent on
this line than I do. I would really appreciate hearing about your
sources.
Ann T. Chaplin
I was in St. Louis for the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference. I
did some research. Here is corrected data.
"He was married in St. Louis, Missouri, by Rev. Charles Louis Carriére
9
November 1892, to KATIE GUNTLY. Katie, daughter of Robert Guntly, was born in
St. Louis, 13 February 1876 and she died there 1 June 1895. LaRue was married,
second, by James J. Spaulding, J.P.Indiana St. Louis, Missouri, 14 May 1898,
to
LAURA E. BOLDING."
Not too much, but should help with a father and a correct spelling!
Ann
Larue Eugene Ames, b. 1874, is the son of Eugene Erie and Armina Maria
(Hamlin) Ames. Eugene was born in Carlton, Genesee County, New York 9 Aug. 1832.
Armina, daughter of Leonard and Polly (Briggs) (Burlingame) Hamlin, was
born in either Starkborough or Rutland, Vermont.
The line goes back Eugene Erie, Erie Lake, Henry, Joseph, William,
William, John, William Ames (the immigrant).
Needless to say I would really appreciate all you can give me on
Eugene Robert Ames and his descendants.
Best wishes,
Ann
Hi
I received your letter and enjoyed reading it. I don't think that I will
have too much information to share with you, but here is what I have. I,
too, noted the name of Larue Ames living with Eugene E. Ames in St. Louis.
Later he is listed as a roofer. I do not know what, if any, relationship he
had with Eugene E. Eugene appears to be a somewhat slippery character. He
and his wife had a rather tumultuous marriage and were separated several
times. She finally moved in with Estella Belle Ames Heimburger in 1909 and
lived there until she died in 1913. Both Eugene E. and his father, Eri Lake
Ames, seem to float in and out of the records and leave very few footprints.
After Eugene's wife died, he just sort of disappears---I do not know if he
stayed in St. Louis, moved back to Will County, Illinois, or to Potsdam, New
York. We
have no record of the date or place of his death. I do not know what the
relationship was between Larue and Eugene, but I assume that they were
relatives.
There is another Ames family prominent in St. Louis. Nathan Ames, a New
Englander, moved to New York, then to Ohio, then to St. Louis. He and his
two sons Henry and Edgar were in the meat packing business, especially salted
beef and salted pork. During the Civil War they made a huge fortune selling
salted meat to both the Union and Confederate forces. After Nathan died, the
two brothers continued and became very prominent citizens of St. Louis and
were well knows as civic-minded philanthropists. They also had burial sites
in Bellfountaine cemetery Eugene's daughter, Estella Belle Ames
Heimburger, also had burial plots in the same cemetery and not too far from
one another. I have not been able to establish if there was any relationship
between these two families. From what I have heard from the family, they may
have been related but that the Nathan-Henry-Edgar tribe may not have had too
much to do with their laboring cousins.
Eugene had no brothers, but he did have a sister Olive who was four years
older than he. I do not know what happened to her. I do not know of any
brothers of Eugene E. His father Eri left few records. Eri's father, Henry
Ames, left few records. It is entirely possible that Larue was related by
some unknown relative. I did not find him listed in the Nathan-Henry-Edgar
family either.
Thanks for the letter and I would also appreciate any info that you might
have that would fill in anything with mine.
Cheers
Maurice/Mac
Just found your other message on GenForum with a different e-mail
address. Larue was born in DuPage, Illinois, 29 Sept. 1874. He m. in St.
Louis, Missouri. 8 Nov. 1892 Katie Gerntly. She was born in St. Louis 13 Feb.
1876 and she died there 1 June 1895. Yes, it appears she died as a
result of childbirth, as their second child, LaRue Edward Ames, was born
24 May 1895 and died in St. Louis 11 June 1895. I have nothing on Eugene
Robert Ames other than his birthdate in St. Louis of 4 Sept. 1893. My
source is folder #661 of the Azel Ames manuscript collection at the New
England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, Mass.
As I said in my other message, I have been working for 6.5 years now to
publish The Descendants of William Ames of Braintree, Massachusetts. I
fully expect to have it ready for publication within the next 18 months.

Hi! I left a followup message on the GenForum, but finally read the
FAQ's and found out how to contact you directly. Yes, Eugene Erie was
born in Carlton, New York 9 Aug 1832 and his son, LaRue Eugene Ames, was b. in
DuPage, Ill. 29 Sept. 1874. Your line goes back to the immigrant,
William Ames, and from there to Bruton, County, Somerset, England. I am
working on a book of all his descendants. Would love to have what you
have. I would send you more now, but it is difficult because we got hit
by a major storm and my desktop was one of the items fried. Hopefully
the hard drives are okay. I have my Ames files on a ZIP drive too, but
the power supply to that got fried, so I can't load onto my laptop (what
I am working with now). Hence I am functioning off of an old index and
old hard copy of my mss. I look forward to hearing from you.

Puerperal Convulsions
pu·er·per·al [pyoo úrprl ] adjective
relating to childbirth: relating to childbirth or the time immediately following
childbirth
[Mid-18th century. From Latin puerperus "bringing forth children,"
from puer "child" + -parus "bringing forth."]

Thank you for the information you sent! As I indicated the information I had
regarding Katie Guntly came from the 1880 US Census for St. Louis. Specifically
it is in Volume 40, Enumeration District 283, Sheet 8, Lines 31 thru 38.
I feel certain that Hilda Ames is not the daughter of Katie Guntly and Larue
Ames. Unless she was born before their marriage, I strongly doubt that or was
a twin of either Eugene Robert or Larue Edward.
You should be able to find Larue and Hilda in the 1900 US Census for St. Louis.
If you don't have access to the US Census, I can look for it the next time I
go to the St. Louis County library.
Robert H Guntley (Guntly) was the son of Christian Guntley and Kate Sundker.
He had two older brothers, Joseph Christian, DOB 12/18/1840 and Edward, DOB
4/1844, DOD 1/15/1912
Let me know what other info you might like to know.
Regards!

Audrey,
Yes, there is a connection. My wife's name is Georgiann Guntly. She is the
granddaughter of George Guntly, great granddaughter of Robert H Guntley. We
had found that Katherine Guntly (Guntley) was born in this family.
This information came from the 1880 U S Census. We show her as the fourth child
of Robert H Guntley and Elisabeth Sommers. She was two years older than George
Guntly.
We have located an Ethel Guntly Bumb, who is still alive. She is a niece of
Katherine Guntly, daughter of Robert E Guntly, Katherine's older brother.
What is your connection to Katie (Katherine) Guntly Ames. Did she die in childbirth?
Lets exchange information if you wish , please contact my wife or I.
