!From "Descendants of Humphry Lloyd" - "Humphry Lloyd was born
about 1700, perhaps in Pennsylvania and died about 1773 in Uwchland Township,
Chester County, Pennsylvania. Humphry and hannah lloyd were received into membership
at Goshen Monthly Meeting by their own requests on 21 December 1741. Births of
9 children to this couple appear in the records, including a son Humphrey who
went to North Carolina. The first child born to Humphry and Hanna Lloyd was born
in 1729 so they were probably married in 1728...In the estate settlement for
Humphry the following names appear: Stephen Phillips, John Rees, and William
Powell. They were probably the husbands of three of the girls. Robert Williams,
husband of Margrett, must have died before 1773 because he is not mentioned in
the will, while David Lloyd had a double share. Perhaps his mother Hannah went
to live with him. A Thomas Lloyd is also mentioned...Humpry Lloyd m. (1) Hannah________
about 1728. Hannah b. about 1710. I don't have any information on Hannah. This
couple belonged to Kennett Monthly Meeting when the children were born."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------
Early in the 5th century (400 A.D.) there occurred a large invasion of England
by several Teutonic (Germanic) tribes consisting of Angles, Saxons and Jutes.
The Angles and Saxons were located mainly in the German district of Schleswig.
The Jutes lived mostly in Jutland, a peninsula comprising the continental portion
of what is now Denmark. Within the Jute forces was a large clan called the "Geats".
Following the invasion, the Jutes settled in Kent - Isle of Wight and in nearby
Hampshire. This is believed to be the earliest introduction of "Gates"
ancestors into English history.
Many early Old English writers often interchanged the names "Geats",
"Jeats" and "Yeats". Believe me, this made search a real
chore. Further reference is not made until the 8th century (700 A.D.)when several
coats-of-arms was awarded to the "Geates" name.
Next reference to the "Gates" name dates to the 14th century (1300
A.D.). At this time there were spread throughout England five Manors with the
following surnames: Gaytes, Gayetes, Gaites, Gaetes, and Gaietes. It is not known
what, if any, relationship existed between them. Although they are often cited
separately in the literature, it could be only a mere misspelling of the same
name.
Landholdings of these five Manors varied from 200 acres to well over 1000 acres.
Each contained a large, fancy house called the Manorhouse and several outbuildings
for those who worked the land, cared for the livestock or did chores in the main
house, such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. The smaller Manors had perhaps
50 workers, while the larger one could have well over 100.
Now, here comes the kicker. Each landowner, of course, had one of the five surnames
listed above. Each of the Manor's workers had the same surname. The only difference
being how they each called themselves, for example: the landowner would be named
Randolph of Gaites -- while the workers were called Geoffrey with Gaites or Margaret
with Gaites. Now things got really confusing!
Early in the 16th century (1500 A.D.), the five Manor surnames, however they
came to be spelled, began to evolve into one common spelling of "G-A-T-E-S".
At this time, the landowner (it is doubtful the land was still owned by the same
families of the previously mentioned five Manor owners) was called Randolph Gates,
while his workers were known as Geoffrey Gates or Margaret Gates. The OF and
the WITH being dispensed.
Now matters really became confusing. Imagine, if you will, over the following
2 or 3 hundred years (1600 A.D. and 1700 A.D.), the landowners and workers all
named "Gates" being dissolved into one common surname, with absolutely
no distinction as to who was the landowner and who was the worker.
Imagine again, over the continuing 2 or 3 hundred years (1800 A.D. and 1900 A.D.),
up to the present time, as all these "Gates" families spread throughout
England and the world, numbering into the hundreds of thousands, the question
begs: from which line of "Gates" does a particular family evolve? Which
is in lineage with a particular landowner? Or perhaps the lineage doesn't go
back to a landowner at all, but rather to someone who cooked the meals or cleaned
the stables. Uncertain to say the least!
What is certain is the above information is merely the trace of a NAME - not
a family bloodline. Tracing a family back to the 16th century or even the 17th
or 18th or 19th century can for most searchers be impossible. True, a bloodline
could be traced directly back to a Manor landowner and beyond. Or it could come
in at any one of hundreds of points when someone was born to a worker family
already on the Manor or to a family who merely "joined" the Manor and
adopted the "Gates" name (or however it was spelled at the time) or
even eventually left the Manor and ventured to any number of small villages -
taking the "Gates" name with them.
It's great to have some blueblood - but when you are only guessing, it doesn't
mean much.
According to the 1990 US census, there were in excess of 150,000 heads of household
with the surname "Gates".
Most searchers are satisfied, however, going back three - four - maybe five generations.
Allow me to offer a word of caution: Don't get suckered into hiring a commercial
firm to do the search for you. I did that when I first started. To do it right
costs a lot of money. All I got was seven different traces, each stating I was
related to entirely different royalty and each providing a rather different pretty
coat-of-arms.
