At half-past nine o'clock on Saturday evening at her home in Port Jervis, died Mrs. Clarissa Jane Doty, the widow of Thomas Drake of Sussex, N. J. Death was due to old age and it ???? infirmities. Deceased was a lady who always had a kind word, a warm smile and a tolerant heart for all, and in return she was the object of sincere affection by all who knew her. She was a great lover of flowers and plants, and seemed to have almost superhuman skill in making them bloom and thrive. She was the daughter of John and Dolly Hemingway Doty and was born at Westtown on the 11th of October 1818. Her girlhood was spent at Sussex on the farm known as the Cooper place. In 1836 she was united in marriage to Thomas Drake, Rev. Mr. Moore of the Papaking Baptist Church officiating. They then removed to Rockford, Ill., and spent eight years, and while there Mr. Drake enlisted in the Union army, and went to the front. After serving 3 years his health completely broke down and he came home, lingering an invalid till 1873 when he died. Deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Anna Coykendall of N. Y. city, who was with her mother constantly during her final illness; also by three sisters, Mrs. Harriet Smith of Johnson, Mrs. Lucinda Mapes of Norfolk, Neb., Miss Arminda Doty, who resided with her sister for the last 5 years of her life. One brother also survives, John Doty who resides on the homestead at Wawayanda near this city. Three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive her. The funeral took place this afternoon at her home in Port Jervis. "Auntie" Doty as she was lovingly called, will be sadly missed by a wide circle of friends, young as well as old, as her heart was ever young. From The Port Jervis Evening Gazette courtesy of Drake Researcher Nancy Coleman-Bello Mrs. Clarissa Jane Drake died at her home, No. 6 Crawford street, at 9:30 o'clock Saturday night of old age and general debility, aged 88 years. The deceased was born at Westtown, N. Y., October 11, 1818, and lived at that place during her early life. When she was 18 years old she was united in marriage to Thomas Drake and soon after came to Port Jervis where she resided for some time and then went to Rockford, Illinois, and lived there for eight years. At the latter place Mr. Drake enlisted in the Illinois State Infantry and served in the Civil War until his health failed when he was honorably discharged. The family then returned to Port Jervis and a son named John Drake enlisted in the second company formed in this village which was in charge of Captain Bush. He was killed in the second days' battle at Gettysburg. Mr. Drake died in this village on August 28, 1873. Mrs. Drake was a kind and loveable woman and she had the respect of a host of friends. She was a member of the Baptist church, of Port Jervis. Those who survive her are one daughter, Mrs. Anna Coykendall, of New York city; three sisters, Miss Arminda Doty, of Port Jervis; Mrs. Lucinda Mapes, of Norfolk, Neb., and Mrs. Harriet Smith, of Johnsons, N.
