Eugene Morrison, Civic Leader, dies.

MIDDLETOWN-Eugene Horton Morrison, chairman of the board at Orange County Trust Co. and a member of one of the area's most well-known families, died Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the Horton Memorial Hospital in Middletown. He was 71.
Morrison suffered a heart attack Aug. 23 while vacationing in Vienna, Austria. He was flown home to Stewart International Airport Aug. 28.
He died at the hospital which was built in memory of a distant relative --Elizabeth Horton-- and on whose board he served for nearly half a century.
Morrison was born Sept. 10, 1921, the youngest of John H. and Christine Myers Morrison's five children. He was the only person born in the 40-room mansion on South Street now known as Morrison Hall, the administrative center of the Orange County Community College in Middletown. The estate, which included 16 acres, was left to his parents by his father's second cousin, Eugene Horton, the last of the Horton family, for whom he was named.
The house with its green ceramic-tiled roof was built at the turn of the century by Eugene Horton's father, Webb Horton, considered at the time to be one of the wealthiest men in the East.
His wealth was made in the Pennsylvania oil fields. Elizabeth Horton was Webb Horton's wife.
Despite a life of wealth and comfort in the South Street "big house," the Morrison children were raised to be unpretentious and involved in the community.
In a 1990 interview, Eugene Morrison said he got a quarter a week allowance every Saturday for which he was expected to do chores "live rake leaves."
When people used to say "Oh, you live in the mansion,' I used to feel that identity was like the feudal system...but we never felt separated from the people," Morrison said in the interview. "At least I hope we weren't".
When Morrison's father died in 1946, his mother chose to move back to her "more comfortable" home across the road. Her youngest son encouraged her to donate the mansion property to the county and did most of the necessary paperwork for the 1949 transaction.
In the past few years, Morrison was a frequent visitor on campus, watching the progress of modernizing Morrison Hall with a larger elevator and doors that were wheelchair accessible. Before the work was started, he walked through the empty rooms reminiscing while college official Peter Alberghini carried a video recorder.
He recalled that two OCCC students once called on him at his Webb Road home, armed with a petition, to "tear down the 'mansion' to make way for a modern building."
"I agreed with them," he said. "But I'm really glad they didn't."
OCCC President Dr. William F. Messner, said that "since its founding in 1950, Mr. Morrison and his family have been staunch supporters of the college and have continued to support it to this day."
In 1990, the college honored the John and Christine Morrison family with its Trustee Award which was received by Eugene Morrison "with humility and appreciation".
John H. Morrison, as a large depositor at the Orange County Trust, helped keep the bank solvent during the Great Depression and was rewarded with a controlling interest in stocks. Although young Morrison learned the principles of baking from his father, he chose to study mechanical engineering. In 1943, he earned a bachelor of science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
With World War II under way, he joined the U. S. Army as a general staff engineer. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of captain, but he stayed active in the U. S. Army Reserve for several years.
He married Clifford Davis of Thomasville, Ga. and often commented, "We really confuse people. I'm Gene and she's Clifford."
He went to work with Texaco Inc. in Norfolk, Va., as a terminal engineer, a job he resigned from a year later to join the Orange County Trust as an assistant trust officer.
Morrison became president of Orange County Trust in 1962. Eight years later, he became chairman of the board, a position he was expected to retire from Sept. 1.
In recent years, when not traveling, he and his wife spent longer "winters" at their Florida home in Fort Myers. But each time he returned to Middletown for a meeting or special occasion, he would say, "It's good to be home."
"He was a strong-willed man who once set his sights on something beneficial for the community, he went all out to see that it became a reality," said Albert Juliano, a past president of the Orange County Trust. "He was my mentor, one of the finest people I've ever known."
John Borland, president of the bank, said, "this is a very sad time for the bank and its customers with the passing of our beloved chairman, colleague, humanitarian and friend."
"He recognized and respected the obligation of this bank to perpetuate the orderly growth of this community and its citizens."
Eugene Morrison was active in many concerns. He served as a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, New York State Banking Board and advisory board of the American Bankers Association. He also was a board member of the Horton Healthcare Foundation's board of directors, Orange County Foreign Trade Zone Management, Orange County Industrial Development Agency, Hillside Cemetery Corporation, the Hoffman Lodge 412 of the Free and Accepted Masons, the Orange County Golf Club and the Orange County Citizens Foundation.
Survivors include his wife, at home, two daughters, Elizabeth Simonton of Dallas, Texas, and Martha Granish of Sydney, Australia; two sons, Eugene Morrison Jr. of Dallas, Texas, and William Morrison of Middletown; one brother, John Morrison of Otisville; one sister, Prudence Gow of Middletown; three granddaughters, Susan Simonton Dewey of Pflugerville, Texas, Katherine Granish and Kelly Granish both of Sydney, Australia; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Grace Episcopal Church, Middletown. The Rev. Joseph Matthews will officiate.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

John H. Morrison Dies Here at 65

John Horton Morrison, retired official of the Howell-Hinchman Company and the Madden-Morrison File Company, Inc., and a member of one of Orange County's most distinguished agricultural families, died yesterday at Horton Memorial Hospital. He was sixty-five. Mr. Morrison had been ailing for several months and, although he appeared to have improved greatly early last week, he took a sudden turn for the worse Friday.
Episcopal services will be conducted at the Morrison family residence, 115 South street, Wednesday at three p.m., in charge of the Rev. E. Spencer Gilley, rector of Grace Church. After the service Masonic rites will be held by Hoffman Lodge with members of Cyprus Commandery, Knights Templar, serving as honor guard. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery.
Although he retired from business since dissolution of the Madden-Morrison Company in 1918, Mr. Morrison had been active as a director of the Orange County Trust Company, vice president of Elizabeth A. Horton Memorial Hospital's Board of Directors and as a member of several Middletown organizations until the time of his death. He resigned as a member of the Board of Visitors of the Middletown State Homeopathic Hospital only three months ago.
Interest in Hospital
Mr. Morrison had shown a keen interest in the development of Horton Hospital. Executor of the will of Elizabeth A. Horton, he had assisted with plans for construction of the institution and served as a member of the Board since the hospital's opening in 1928.
In addition to his activities in Hoffman Lodge, he held membership in Midland Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, Cyprus Commandery, and Mecca Temple of the Mystic Shrine. He was a Thirty-second degree Mason.
He was a member of Middletown Lodge of Elks, the Orange County Golf Club, the Middletown Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Bakers Club of New York City, and was a life member of the Congressional Country Club in Washington. He was also a member of Excelsior Hook & Ladder Company for many years.
He was vice president of the State Charities Aid Association, Citizens Welfare Committee of Orange County, and a trustee of the Home for Aged Women here.
Born February fifth, 1881 in the Town of Montgomery, Mr. Morrison was the son of William Henry Harrison and Agnes Horton Morrison. He was a grandson of Hamilton Morrison, founder of the Orange County Agricultural Society, whose 280-acre farm in the Town of Montgomery was known far and wide as the best improved estate in the township and county at the time the Agricultural Society organized in 1840.
Hamilton Morrison's father had come to America at the age of sixteen and purchased land in the Town of Montgomery which was later to become the site of the family homestead. The elder Hamilton Morrison was born in Ballynahinch, North Ireland, but was of Scotch extraction. He was a tanner by trade.
Entered Tannery Business
As a youth, John H. Morrison studied at the Goodwill grade school and the old Montgomery Academy and, after his graduation from Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie, he also entered the tanning business. His first position was at Middleboro, Kentucky and later he took a position with the same company in Chattanooga.
He came to Middletown at about the turn of the century to take over the office management of the Howell-Hinchman Tannery and a few years later, with Frank Madden, he organized the Madden-Morrison File Company, Inc., with a large manufacturing plant on Dolson avenue.
Mr. Morrison was a member of the Twentyfourth Separate Company, National Guard, and was also a member of the Twentyfourth Separate Company band. He played both the French horn and alto horn in the organization. He retired from the National Guard in 1916 holding the rank of first lieutenant and battalion adjutant.
On May fourteenth, 1904 Mr. Morrison married Miss Christine Myers of Middletown, who survives with five children. They are Ray Hamilton Morrison of Hagerstown, Md., Rosamond Ogden, wife of Roger B. Smith of LaCanada, California; John Horton, Jr. of Middletown; Prudence Gywn, wife of Dr. Marvin K. Lane of Holliston, Mass.; and Eugene Horton of Norfolk, Va. Eleven grandchildren also survive.
On his mother's side, Mr. Morrison represented another prominent Orange County farm family--the Hortons. In 1931 Mr. Morrison headed a group of Orange County residents who financed a project of clearing the old Montgomery Berea cemetery. He took a keen interest in the restoration of the 125-year-old burial ground in which his grandfather, Ray Horton, is buried.
The Morrisons have lived at the South street mansion since shortly after the death of its builder, Eugene Horton, in 1918.

John Horton Morrison Jr.

John Horton Morrison Jr., a banker, oil company shareholder, recipient of World War II Purple Hearts, golf champion, and benefactor of many Middletown organizations, died Saturday, Sept. 19, at his Middletown home. He was 86.
Mr. Morrison, 86, was born April 17, 1912 on Mills Ave. in Middletown and grew up a block away in the South Street mansion that the family gave to Orange County Community College, and this is now Morrison Hall.
He attended schools in Middletown and colleges in Michigan and California before going to work for Texaco, a company he served for 25 years and in which his father held a major stock position.
An Army infantry officer, he was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe.
Mr. Morrison married Marchessa Worcester, a resident of S. Louis he met on a Mediterranean cruise. They became the parents of four children. Mrs. Morrison died several years ago on another cruise -- as the couple were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
The Morrison family's association with the Orange Trust Co. in Middletown extends over more than three generations. John H. Morrison III is currently chairman of the bank's board. Another son, Edward, is also on the bank's board. Mr. Morrison and his family have a long history of supporting churches, the YMCA, the Elizabeth A. Horton Memorial Hospital, the community college, and many social and welfare organizations.
Golf was an important activity for Mr. Morrison, as well as for his father and his late brother, Eugene. Both John Jr. and Eugene were champions at the Orange County Golf Club where Morrison support was an important factor in its survival during depressed times.
While Mr. Morrison and his wife were on their honeymoon in Banff, Canada, he teamed up with another amateur and defeated a team consisting of Gene Sarazan and Helen Hicks, national golf luminaries.
Mr. Morrison was a student at the University of Michigan when he courted his future wife. When she became a student at Mills College in California, he promptly transferred to the College of the Pacific.
Mr. Morrison was the son of John Horton Morrison and his wife Christine.
He is survived by four children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His children are John H. Morrison of Middletown, Sarah Marchessa Morrison of Middletown, Edward W. Morrison of Stowe, Vt., and Eugene H. Morrison of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He is also survived by his sister Prudence Morrison Gow of Middletown, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Morrison was predeceased by a sister, Rosamund, and two brothers, Ray Hamilton Morrison and Eugene Morrison.
Friends are invited to call Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Ave., Middletown.
A memorial service for Mr. Morrison will be announced at a later date.

Raymond E. Mullenix of Brewster Drive, Middletown, a maintenance supervisor with Orange County Home and Infirmary and lifelong resident of the area, died Sunday, June 6, at Westchester County Medical Center, Valhalla. He was 74.
The son of the late Edward and Lmeta Knapp Mullenix, he was born Dec. 25, 1918 in Goshen. He was an Army Air Corps veteran and a former member of Civil Service Employees Association.
Survivors include his wife, Frances W. Mullenix, at home; one son, Ronald R. Mullenix of Delhi; one daughter, Joan F. Guvette of Mattoon, Ill.; and three grandchildren.

Christine Morrison, 97 OCCC benefactor, dies

MIDDLETOWN--Christine Myers Morrison, whose gift of her South Street mansion made possible the opening of Orange County Community College in 1950, died Saturday at her 42 Mills Ave. home. She was 97.
A Philanthropist and matriarch of one of the region's wealthiest families, Mrs. Morrison lived in Middletown most of her life. She came here as an infant after a fire destroyed her family's house in Yonkers, and grew up in the Mulberry Street home of an uncle.
She attended Middletown High School and was in one of the first classes to graduate after the school's name was changed from Wallkill Academy. She married John H. Morrison in Grace Episcopal Church, Middletown, in May 1903.
Mr. Morrison inherited the spacious South Street mansion after the March 10, 1918 death of Eugene H. Horton, the last member of the Webb Horton family to occupy the home. Mr. Morrison, a relative and business associate of Eugene Horton, was willed the 40-plus room home and all its furnishings. At the time, the Morrisons lived at 32 Mills Ave., in the house that was later moved to the corner of Mills and Bedford and became Mrs. Morrison's home again after she gave up the mansion.
Mrs. Morrison's eldest son, the late Ray Hamilton Morrison, recalled a few years ago that his mother was reluctant to move into a large home, preferring to live in more modest surroundings. She chose the mansion as the "lesser of two evils" when her husband suggested they move to New York for business reasons.
The Morrisons had four children when they moved into the mansion. A fifth child, Eugene H., now chairman of the board for the Orange County Trust Company, was born in the mansion room which is now the office of the college president.
Mr. Morrison died Oct. 20, 1946. His will gave his widow use of the South Street estate for life, after which it was to go to Horton Memorial Hospital, a major beneficiary of the Morrison philanthropies. In 1949, Mrs. Morrison agreed to give up that interest and a committee under the late Ralph E. Tower raised almost $80,000 to wipe out the debt outstanding against Horton Memorial Hospital. With its debt paid, the hospital agreed to give up its claim to the mansion. In September 1950, Orange County Community College was born.
Mrs. Morrison moved early the next year to her old home, which had been moved within view of the new college. The South Street residence became Morrison Hall, the college's administrative building.
Since then, Mrs. Morrison made yearly contributions to the college's scholarship and operating funds. Churches of all denominations in the community received generous donations from her each year. The YMCA, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and many other volunteer organizations have depended largely on Mrs. Morrison's annual gifts to meet their budgets. Recently, she gave a large contribution to the Historical Society of Middletown and Wallkill Precinct.
In 1951, Mrs. Morrison became the first woman to be named Citizen of the Year by the Middletown Junior Chamber of Commerce. At the eighth college commencement a new college song, entitled "Christine" was dedicated in her honor.
Mrs. Morrison was born Aug. 23, 1879 in Yonkers, the daughter of Frank and Harriet Ogden Myers.
Surviving are two sons, John H. Jr. of Otisville and Eugene H. of Middletown; two daughters, Rosamond Smith of California and Prudence Gow of Middletown; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Private funeral services are Monday. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Middletown.
Visiting hours are 7-9 p.m. today at the Cornelius, Dodd and Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Middletown.

Miss Julia F. Myers, school attendance officer for several years but better known as a teacher of dancing here and in neighboring communities, died yesterday at Horton memorial Hospital. She had been a patient seven weeks. Death was the result of a heart ailment.
In recent years, until her retirement a few months ago, Miss Myers conducted The Harriet Shop on James street. Previously she had been a dressmaker.
The funeral will be at two p. m. Thursday at Grace Eposcipal Church with the Rev. Harold L. Andress officiating. Interment will be in Hillside cemetery. It was announced the casket would be open at the church from noon to two p. m. Thursday.
Born September sixteenth, 1869, at Yonkers, Miss Myers was a daughter of William H. and Harriet Ogden Myers. After the death of her father in 1879 the family came to Middletown to live with Mrs. Myers' father, Thomas Purdy Ogden, on Mulberry street. Early in life Miss Myers became a member of Grace Church, and was active in its organizations.
She is survived by three sisters: Jane B., wife of Edward O. Dayton of Hillsdale, N. J.; Beatrice O., widow of Thomas C. Rogers, and Christine M., wife of John H. Morrison, both of Middletown.

James Smiley Nelson, fifty-five Sprague avenue, died at the Middletown Sanitarium yesterday. He was the son of Thomas an Mary Elizabeth Ogden Nelson of Scotchtown.
Mr. Nelson, who was a painter by trade, is survived by one sister, Mrs. Letitia Halcott.
