OBITUARY
Daniel Ogden
Deacon Daniel Ogden died at the residence of his son, Mr. George T. Ogden, Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Some ten years ago he was stricken with paralysis, affecting his mind as well as his bodily strength. Last Wednesday he sustained a severe and fatal stroke of the same disease, since which time has has been unable to speak or take any other than liquid nourishment.
Daniel Ogden was born in the town of Wallkill October 5, 1804, in a farm house located on one of the farms now occupied by the State Homeopathic Asylum, and within sight of what we are now proud to call Middletown. It stood on the knoll near the present carriage house of the Asylum.
He learned the cooper's trade, and went to live with General Dunning at Ridgebury, devoting his evenings to the study of music and teaching singing school.
On the 23d of October 1829, he was married to Arminda Tryon, daughter of Timothy Tryon, a farmer, who was Collector of the town of Wallkill a period of twenty years. After his marriage he lived at Centerville three years, but his trade not agreeing with him, he concluded to try farming, and purchased the farm where he resided at his death. Since removing there he again carried on for a season, at Pilgrim's Corners, a cooperage business in partnership with his brother Jacob, selling out to Benjamin Helms, now of Osage, Iowa.
Of his parents but little is known. His father died when he was four years of age. Thomas P. Ogden, of this village, is a brother, as is also Jacob H., who resides at Romulus, Seneca county, a man fourscore years of age. He had two half-brothers, Jonathan and Gilbert. He had two own sisters. One married David Wheat and the other George Graham. Mrs. Wheat was killed by the cars over twenty years ago at Howells Depot.
Deacon Ogden was a good man. It was his Christian character and integrity that shone out prominently in his life. He first joined the Mount Hope Congregational Church, more familiarly designated in those days the "yellow church," then standing about one-half mile this side of Mount Hope village, and long since removed and unknown to the present generation. He afterward connected with the Congregational Church in Middletown, where for a period of over forty years he has been honored as Deacon.
His devotion to the church is worthy of commendation. Its interests lay near his heart. In sunshine and storm, summer and winter, did he attend its appointed meetings, no storm so severe that he did not brave it. Nor was he content himself to go to God's house to enjoy religious services, but for many years would hitch his team to a big three-seated wagon and call for his neighbors to accompany him.
His last service, officially, was some four years ago this month at a communion season, since which time he has been too feeble to undertake the labor.
He was passionately fond of sacred music, and his fine tenor voice , for twenty years, led the service of song. It was only when the infirmities of age forbade that he was content to give way to others.
Eleven ministers have been settled in the Congregational church during the long period Mr. Ogden was Deacon. He joined the society under the Rev. Chas. Mackin, who was succeeded by Rev. Harris Righter in 1842, Rev. J. C. Terrettin 1845, Rev. L. C. Lockwood in 1846, Rev. S. Y. Lum in 1851, Rev. G. W. Timlow in 1854, Rev. Daniel Lancaster in 1855, and the Revs. Jonathan Crane, Chas. A. Harvey and Dr. Frederic R. Marvin, the last named being the present pastor.
Mr. George T. Ogden, who occupies the old homestead, is the only child living. Two daughters and one son died many years ago, the son at 19 and the daughters at 17 and 26 years of age. His wife died last December.
Funeral services will be held to-morrow in the Congregational church, at half-past two o'clock. Friends meet at his late residence, near Pilgrim's Corners, at 2 o'clock.

LIGHTS BLAMED

Driver Says Autoist Stepped Into Path of Car

Eugene J. Ogden, 397 North street, died in Thrall Hospital from injuries received on October 26 when he was struck by a Goshen bus. Ogden was struck by the bus on the Middletown-Goshen road a short distance north of Denton. At the time of the accident he was standing by the side of his automobile making repairs. The accident occurred about 9:30 in the evening, shortly after the lights on Ogden's car had failed and he had stopped to repair them. The bus attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle and struck Ogden in the darkness, the driver declared. In attempting to see Ogden who is alleged to have stepped back from his car when the bus approached, the driver of the bus crashed into the machine which he had attempted to pass.
When Ogden was first taken to the hospital it was believed the he was not fatally injured. But complications set in and efforts of physicians to save his life proved futile.

Fred D. Ogden Dies of Pneumonia

Fred Dorrance Ogden died Friday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, at his home, Ogden Farm, near this city, where he was born April 2, 1868, a son of George Timlow Ogden and Emmeline Clark.
Mr. Ogden had been ill for about 10 days, the cause of his death being pneumonia and the announcement of his passing away has caused universal sadness among his legion of friends, as he was a man highly esteemed for his sterling qualities of heart. His entire life had been spent on the farm, where he delighted in following the progressive ideas of an agriculturist.
June 3, 1913, he was united in marriage with Florence Caroline Young, the ceremony taking place at Cedar Cliff, this state. She survives him with two children, William Y. and Frederick D. He is also survived by his mother, two sisters, Mrs. C. A. Whitney and Miss Genevieve Ogden, of this city; two brothers, Alderman Albert C. Ogden, of this city, and Frank T. Ogden, of Owego.
Mr. Ogden was a member of the First Congregational Church, this city, one of the Board of Trustees and a Christian gentleman who could always be depended upon to discharge his obligations faithfully. George T. Ogden, an extensive dairy farmer of the town of Wallkill, was born March 29, 1841, upon the farm where he still makes his home. His father, Daniel, also a native of the same county, learned the cooper's trade in early manhood, and successfully followed that occupation for many years. Late in life he turned his attention to agriculture, and was thus engaged until his death, in 1880. His wife, who bore the maiden name of Arminda Tryon, was born in this county, and died here three months prior to his decease.
In the district schools and in Wallkill Academy our subject gained an excellent education. During vacations he worked upon the farm, and upon completing his studies turned his attention wholly to farm work. He is the owner of one hundred and ten acres, upon which are noticeable a neat residence and modern farm buildings. Few homes in the county are more inviting than his. He is extensively engaged in the dairy business, and has on his place forty-five or fifty cows. For about twenty years he has marketed the milk in Middletown, where he has a large number of permanent customers.
September 9, 1863, Mr. Ogden married Emeline, daughter of Chauncey and Emeline (Slawson) Clark, of New Jersey. Whitney, of Middletown; Genevieve B.; and Frank T., a druggist. Mr. Ogden is a Deacon in the Congregational Church, to which his wife and children also belong. Hannah Ogden Crane
Hannah Ogden, widow of the late Joseph Crane of Bloominburgh died suddenly Monday evening at the home of her daughter, Carrie, widow of the late Walter Uptegrove, on Orange street, of apoplexy in the 65th year of her age. Failing to arouse her Dr. Swartwout was summoned, who found her beyond the reach of medical skill. She lingered in an unconscious state until the hour of her death. The deceased was born near Bloomingburgh, June 12, 1827. In 1848 she married Joseph Crane of that place who died some twenty years ago. The principal part of her life was spent at Bloomingburgh.
For a number of years she has lived with her daughters in this village. She was a devout, earnest member of the M.E. church of this village for a number of years and was held in the highest esteem by her large number of acquaintances. bullet Harriet Ogden was born on 31 Dec 1844 in Middletown, Orange, NY. She was a in 1881 in Cashier & bookkeeper at G.B. Adams & Co, Middletown, NY. She died on 2 May 1895 in Middletown, Orange, NY. She was buried in Hillside Cem., Middletown, NY.(755) She was in Grace Episcopal Church, Middletown, NY. She has reference number 2121. Middletown Daily Times Thursday, May 2, 1895

At half-past twelve o'clock this morning Mrs. Hattie Ogden Myers whose illness has been mentioned the the Times passed peacefully away surrounded by the members of her family at her home, on Mulberry street, in the same house where she was born and in later years married.
The immediate cause of death was cerebro spinal meningitis from which trouble she had been a sufferer for several months past having been first attacked by it in December last after which she was confined to her home for a period of two months.
At the end of that time she returned to her duties as cashier and bookkeeper for Geo. B. Adams & Co., a position she had held for fourteen years.
After she had resumed her duties a few weeks, severe headaches appeared which affected her to such an extent that her sight became so impaired that at times it was not infrequent or her to be possessed of a double vision.
About a month ago it was discovered that her old trouble had appeared in an even worse form than ever, and since then she has been closely confined to her home, where she received every comfort and relief that could possibly be administered by loving ones and skilled physicians.
Despite all these, since last Saturday a gradual failing has been noticeable, but she bore up under it, seeming to ward the end off to the last possible moment in the brave manner that has been one of her chief characteristics in her battles through life.
Mrs. Myers was a daughter of the late Thomas B. Ogden, who died in this city in September, 1890. Her mother died in Middletown in the same house in 1865.
The deceased was wedded Nov. 26, 1868, to William H. Myers, of Yonkers, who in his day was a noted athlete and oarsman along the Hudson. He died in Yonkers in 1879, leaving his wife and four children to mourn him.
Shortly after this time Mrs. Myers returned to Middletown, where she has since resided. She has had the very responsible position with G. B. Adams & Co. for 14 years of this time, and has performed her duties in a manner that made her services very valuable to her employers, who in her death feel deeply grieved.
The deceased is survived by four daughters, all of this city--Julia Frances, a dressmaker; Jennie Brewster, Beatrice Ogden, stenographer with the Standard Oil Company, and Christine Morrison, who is attending school. One child Addie Littell, a bright little girl of seven years, died a short time after removing here.
Her surviving brothers and sisters are Miss Rosamond Ogden, residing at home; John T. Ogden, the harnessmaker; May O., wife of William G. VanKeuren, of Stamford, Conn., and Harry C. Ogden, with J. T. King, the druggist. The late Wood T. Ogden, who died in 1889, was a brother.
For a number of years previous to her marriage the deceased resided in Yonkers, where she held a responsible clerkship in one of the city offices, and where many acquaintances still reside who will sincerely regret to hear of her untimely demise.
At one time she also taught school at West Farms, N. Y.
The deceased and her family have been faithful attendants of Grace Episcopal Church for many years.
Mrs. Myers possessed a disposition so affable and kind that she had endeared herself to many friends and acquaintances, who had formed a strong attachment for her.
She was especially devoted to her children and it seems sad indeed that she has been removed from them by the hand of death at just a time when she might have enjoyed her reclining years after living to see her children grown up and doing nicely for themselves.
The funeral notice appears elsewhere.
