"Harry C. Ogden, pharmacist, experimented with X-rays as a hobby, having fitted up an apparatus of his own manufacture except for the Crooke's tube in his home on South street.
Friday, June 5, 1896, Miss Sadie Stanton of Ellenville, employed in Middletown, ran a needle into her finger, a piece breaking off. Dr. J. B. Hulett chanced to think of Ogden's X-ray. Ogden was enthusiastic, and June 9 Miss Stanton's hand was X-rayed. The needle was readily located so that it could be extracted with a minor surgical operation.
Mr. Ogden took several other X-rays for surgical purposes. His work attracted considerable attention in scientific circles."

"The changing pattern of life wherever modern medicine is practiced is due in incalculable and little recognized degree to a couple of well remembered Middletowners: Harry C. Ogden, druggist, and Dr. Joseph B. Hulett, a Hoffman member from 1891 to his death in 1936. Ogden had been intrigued by the X-ray which had been made available for medical use by the scientist Roentgen in 1895 but had not been applied to any appreciable extent. Ogden developed an instrument for its use at his home on South street, and Dr. Hulett was the first to put it to a practical test. Williams preserved the facts and date in his Middletown history."

He was married to Della Meade Bump in 1885. Children were: Ralph E. Ogden.

bullet Henry B. Ogden was born on 28 Jan 1816 in Howell's, Orange, NY. He died on 3 Feb 1874 in Middletown, Orange, NY. He was buried in Hillside Cem., Middletown, NY. He has reference number 2068. The Orange County Press Friday Morning, February 6, 1874

Died, from paralysis, after a lingering illness of several weeks, at his residence in this village, Tuesday morning, Henry B. Ogden, aged 58 years.
Few persons were better known in this section of Orange County, and very few, if any, could boast of a greater number of warmly attached personal friends. The deceased was born at Howell's Jan. 28, 1816. He has resided in Middletown about twenty-one years. For eleven years he kept the Ogden House (now the Taylor House kept by Mr. Palmer) while under his management, as now, was a popular hotel.
Mr. Ogden has held some official -----?------. In 1868 he was the Democratic candidate for Supervisor in the Town of Wallkill, and not withstanding the fact that this town had always given a considerable Republican majority, he was elected to the office and served one year. He was a candidate the following Spring but after a close and excitable test was beaten by our present Supervisor, Mr. Wm. M. McQuoid. He was a candidate several more times but lost to Republicans, once for Member of Assembly (1871). Last spring he was elected Collector of the Town of Wallkill, which office he held at the date of his death. He however has not been able to discharge the duties of the office on account of his sickness and Supervisor McQuoid has kindly volunteered to attend to the collection of the taxes for him.
Mr. Ogden has at different times been quite extensively engaged in business in this place and vicinity of Newburgh. He built and for several years operated the Brewery in this village, and also for a short time carried on a Brewery at Newburgh. Latterly he had been rather unfortunate in business having met with considerable losses by the bad management and failure of other parties.
The deceased was passionately fond of music, and was well known as a violinist of more than ordinary talent. He was a genial, warm-hearted, generous man who was ever ready to disoblige himself to do a kindness to those around him.
Mr. Ogden was a member of Hoffman Lodge No. 412, E. A. M. and will be buried with Masonic ceremonies. His funeral will take place on Thursday at 2 o'clock p. m. from the Episcopal Church.

May 1853.
"There had been a sign earlier in the year that Middletown was attracting also talent of other kinds. H. B. Ogden, "the well known landlord and dancing teacher of Howells, is to remove to Middletown and keep the Depot House," said the Hasbrouck Whig Press. The Depot House, operated theretofore by Jonathan Ogden, was "opposite the Erie Depot", meaning across the tracks at James and Union Streets.
H. B. Ogden's interest were many. Among them, the present Hotel Waldo on Linden Avenue "opposite the Erie depot," long operated by the late Masonically renowned John M. Gaynor, originated as H. B. Ogden's brewery. He had a like business in Newburgh. And he was one of the founders of Middletown Savings Bank. He died in 1874, only 58 years old; but the Ogden House, now replaced by a storehouse for the far-flung Zwick & Schwartz produce supply firm, had been sold to Alexander Taylor in 1866 for $12,000. It was thereafter known as the Taylor House.
The same Spring that Mr. Ogden came to town from the important railroad shipping point of Howells Depot, 1853, Joseph Monell, one of the old-time taverners, had sold a piece of real estate "on the south side of Main Street" to Thomas E. Hulse, who "proposes, we understand, to erect a new musical hall on the ground."

Ogden-Smith
A very pleasant wedding occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Smith on Wednesday evening when their daughter, Jennie, was married to Ira Ogden, of Otisville. The bridal party, preceded by Edna Smith and Daisy Fitzgerald, carrying baskets of flowers, and the maid of honor, little Ada VanInwigen, the four-year-old niece of the bride, entered the parlor to the strains of Lohengdo's wedding march, played by Miss Belle Hatch and took their places under an arch of evergreens and a horseshoe.
The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Luther Littell assisted by Rev. Thomas Fitzgerald.
Mr. Ira Smith, brother of the bride, was best man, and the bridesmaid was Miss Alma Ogden, the groom's sister.
Immediately after the conclusion of the ceremony the bridal party led the way to the dining room where a bountiful wedding supper was served. After their return to the parlor the bride and groom received the greetings of about a hundred relatives and friends.

The Latest Wedding
Wednesday was a happy day at the residence of Mrs. Ogden, (widow of the late much lamented John Ogden,) on the corner of James and King-sts. The occasion was the nuptials of Miss Jane E. Ogden, her daughter, and Mr. E. M. Norton, of the Gazette Printing Company, of Port Jervis. Only the relatives of the principals and a limited number of intimate friends were favored with invitations, but the assembly was a decidedly brilliant one. The guests arrived about half-past ten a. m., and soon after the Rev. Alexander Capron, Rector of Grace (Episcopal) church, entered the parlor, followed by the happy couple and their bridesmaid and groomsman, Miss Alice Norton and Mr. Charles Madden.
The beautiful solemn and impressive marriage service of the Episcopal church, was then performed, after which the happy "man and wife," received the hearty congratulations of their friends.
What did the bride wear, did you say, ladies? Well, as near as we can remember, she wore an elegant steel or lavender colored Irish poplin en train, trimmed with satin puffing of a little darker hue. She wore a string of pearls around her neck, and her hair, which was tastefully arranged, was adorned with a chaplet of white flowers.
Miss Alice Norton was attired in an elegant green silk, en train, and cut pompadour, trimmed with white satin puffing. Her coiffure was tasty and becoming. The other ladies were all elegantly and tastefully attired.
Some very handsome presents were laid upon the entire table and very much admired.
After the ceremony, the many good things which Mrs. Ogden knows how to prepare, were speedily discussed, and the bridal party took their departure for Hartford, Conn., by the Cincinnati Express, followed by the best wishes of all their numerous friends. May they always have quiet sailing on the sometimes turbulent sea of matrimonial life.

He was leading a colt in front of the Bell House, when by some means the colt became frightened and attempted to get away. In attempting to hold him, Mr. Ogden was thrown down and the horse stepped on him, cutting his head very badly. He was carried into the Bell House and cared for, and afterward taken home. It is feared that his injuries are very serious.

Obituary from the "Middletown Daily Press" Friday, Nov. 21, 1884 Issue

John S. Ogden, whose injuries were noted in the PRESS of Tuesday last, died last night from them, having never recovered consciousness since they were received. He was 67 years of age. Mr. Ogden was born in this town, and during his earlier years spent some time in Sussex county. Some twenty-five years ago he removed to Otisville, where he worked at his trade as a shoemaker. Later he moved to Howells, where he kept a hotel for a couple of years, after which he came to this village and again began working at his trade. For many years he has served the town as Constable, and was a square, honest man in every respect, almost too tender-hearted for his position. He is survived by five children, three sons and two daughters. His funeral notice appears elsewhere.

From "The Daily Argus", Middletown NY Friday, Nov. 21, 1884 Issue:

John S. Ogden, who was injured on North street, Tuesday afternoon, by his colt which had taken fright at the Erie switch engine, jumping upon him, died last evening, from the effects of the injuries then sustained. His most severe hurt was a fracture of the skull, and he never recovered consciousness after the accident.
Mr. Ogden, who was sixty-seven years and twenty-four days old, was born near this village. He learned the trade of shoemaking when a boy. About forty-five years ago he married Aceseth Grier, of the town of Mount Hope, and removed to Branchville, Sussex County, N.J., where he lived and worked at his trade until about 1867, when he returned to this county, locating at Otisville. In 1869 he moved to Howell's Depot, and kept the hotel there for two years. He then removed to this village, where he has since lived. During all the years of his residence here, with the exception of a few months, he has held the office of constable, and proved himself one of the most careful and conscientious men who ever held that position.
Mr. Ogden was a man of the kindest possible instincts, whose heart quickly responded to any appeal to his sympathies. He was held in very high esteem by those who knew him intimately, as an honest, honorable man. He is survived by his widow and five children, Margaret J., wife of Augustus Terwilliger, of Unionville; Cornelia A., unmarried and living at home; John W., of Goshen; Charles E., of Bridgeport, Conn.; and Sylvanus G., living at home.
The notice of the funeral will be found elsewhere.

Obituary
John Thomas Ogden
John T. Ogden, one of the oldest business men of this city, passed away at 6:15 o'clock this morning at his home No. 5 Mulberry street, after an illness of several years of paralysis. He had been confined to his bed for the past year; receiving the constant and loving care of his wife and children.
Mr. Ogden was one of the best known men in Middletown and vicinity. He had conducted a store and harness making establishment at No. 40 West Main street continuously since the Civil War and by his integrity and strictly honest business methods had gained a reputation far and wide for the excellence of his harness. He was an honorable and upright man and Middletown loses a good citizen in his passing.
John T. Ogden was born May 18, 1840, on Mulberry street, this city, only a short distance from the house where he died. He was a son of Thomas Purdy Ogden and Julia W. Cox. He had always made his home in Middletown, having learned the harness making trade with his grandfather, Harry Cox, in the store next door to the present store on West Main street. He worked at his trade in the store of West Main street before the war. When the Civil War broke out Mr. Ogden enlisted in the Third New York Cavalry and served two years. He was injured through his horse falling upon him.
On his return from war Mr. Ogden again took up his trade and located in the store where he has since been. For a number of years his son Charles G. Ogden has been associated with him in the business. Mr. Ogden was a Post Commander of Captain W. A. Jackson Post, G. A. R. and one of the organizers of the Union Veterans Union of this city. He was also a trustee of the Hillside Cemetery Corporation.
Mr. Ogden was married in October, 1873, to Miss Mary Emma Gillen, of Fair Oaks. Mrs. Ogden survives with three children, H. Louise and Elizabeth, and Charles G., all of this city. One brother, Harry C. Ogden, of the firm of Ogden & Shimer, of this city, and one sister, Mae, wife of William VanKeuren of Stamford, Conn. also survive. The late Wood T. Ogden, of this city, who died in 1889, was a brother.
The funeral notice will be found in another column.

Sad and Fatal Accident

Mr. Jonathon Ogden, Proprietor of the Empire House in this village, was accidently burned so badly on Sunday last, that he died the next evening. It appears that he was visiting one of his distilleries, at Mud Creed, on the road to Scotchtown, and while examining the works with a lighted lamp to discover the cause of a leakage, the liquor was set on fire, causing an explosion which prostrated both Mr. Ogden and a hired man who was assisting him. The man on recovering found Mr. O. still insensible and his clothing all ablaze. He hastened to his relief, and dashed water upon him to put out the fire, but he was already so badly burned that death ensued the next day. His wife, who was at Ellenville, was sent for, but he continued unconcious up to the time of his death. Mr. Ogden was aged 43 years, 6 months and 21 days.

bullet Lotta M. Ogden was born on 4 Jul 1870.(800) She died UNKNOWN. She has reference number 2434. Middletown Daily Press June 7, 1894

One of the prettiest weddings which has occurred in this vicinity was celebrated at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, at the home of Mr. Geo. T. Ogden, one mile northwest of this city. His eldest daughter, Miss Lottie May Ogden, was united in marriage with Mr. Charles Abell Whitney.
The beautiful Ogden home is well adapted for a social event of any kind, and when the floral tastes of the ladies of the home have had full sway the place seems a perfect paradise. On this occasion the interior of the home was decorated profusely with a large variety of flowers which thrive in June. Every nook and corner contained some display, while mantels and fireplaces were completely hidden, the sweet odors of the roses filling the air.
Dr. Robinson, of the First Congregational church united these two members of his congregation in the presence of a large number of friends. The bride was prettily attired in white satin. The waist was accordion plaited chiffon. She wore at her throat beautiful diamond ornaments, the fit of the groom, and carried a bouquet of bridal roses. The bridal veil was caught up in front with a bow and orange blossoms giving the impression of a coronet.
The maid of honor was Miss Genevieve Ogden, sister of the bride. She wore white point d'e'prit, trimmed with lavender and carried a cascade bouquet. Lavender was the color of the wedding and it was noticeable on many of the toilets. Mrs. Ogden wore black satin brocade, white lace and lavender velvet, and Mrs. Whitney wore black satin and a jet bonnet.
The best man was Mr. T. Ed. Hayes and Mr. Fred Congleton, of New York, and Mr. Fred Ogden, brother of the bride were ushers. They wore boutonnieres of sweet peas.
During the ceremony Miss Dewey, of Plainfield, played very delicately on the piano. After the congratulations, caterer H. C. Duncan of Newburg, served delicious refreshments in the dining room and parlors. It was intended that the beautiful and commodious lawn should be used for this purpose, but the erratic weather prevented the carrying out of this plan.
At 7 o'clock the couple were driven to the Erie station and left at 7.12 for New York, the remainder of their trip being known only to themselves. A large party of friends placed cartridges upon the tracks and made other demonstrations of their congratulations when the train started.
The bride's travelling suit was of light chocolate brown covert cloth with shot silk bodice and lemon chiffon trimmings, brown straw hat, with brown ribbons and velvet trimmings.
After the departure of the couple the guests were delighted with the presents which were on exhibition in the home. The ushers received handsome scarf pins from the groom.
The guests from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Whitney, parents of the groom, of Lisle, N. Y.; Mrs. James A. Radcliff, Mrs. Wheeler and Miss Hunter, of Brooklyn; Dr. and Mrs. Capon, of New Paltz; Miss Dewey, of Plainfield, N. J., and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. L. Cole, of Port Jervis.
Mr. Charles A. Whitney, is prominently connected with the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company, and is highly respected by his employers.
Mr. Whitney is actively engaged in church work, being superintendent of the Sunday school of the First congregational Church. He is a member of Excelsior Hook & Ladder company, and secretary of the Middletown club.
Mrs. Whitney's marriage takes another from the members of the S. C. C. which thrived socially, three winters ago. She has always been prominent in church and social circles, and is popular wherever known. She attended the New Paltz Normal school, of which Prof. Capon is principal.
On their return to this city, Mr. and Mrs. Whitney will make their home with Mrs. Myron Buck, on West Hanford street.
The Press wished to join in the congratulations of the hour. Parents: George Timlow Ogden and Emeline Clark.

Sad Accident

On Wednesday morning, 18th Inst., about 7 o'clock, as the Dunkirk Express approached Howell's Depot, the locomotive ran over a wagon that was crossing the track, containing a man and woman. The woman, Mrs. David Wheat, was instantly killed. The man, Mr. Amzi Mapes, is very seriously injured, and as he is an old man, nearly 70 years of age, his recovery is extremely doubtful. They both resided at Mount Hope, Orange County. The unfortunate old gentleman is partly deaf, and did not hear the whistle, which sounded long and loud before the collision. __Tribune.

***We further learn that the Way Freight was going east at the time of the accident, and that Mr. Mapes was probably looking out for it, not expecting the Express. The locomotive struck the horse and forward wheels, carrying the animal as far as the cut beyond Howell's, where it was taken off. The body of the wagon was uninjured. Mrs. Wheat doubtless came to her melancholy end by being struck by the crank of the locomotive on the side of her head, which threw her several feet into the air, killing her instantly. She was the mother of Mr. David B. Wheat, of this village. Her funeral discourse was preached by Rev. Mr. Downs at Howell's on Sunday last. Mr. Mapes is recovering. His age is about sixty, and he is not deaf, as stated above.

At an inquisition held at the house of Moses Bell, in Howell's, on Wednesday, Aug. 1st, 1855, to inquire into the cause and circumstances pertaining to the death of Martha Wheat, the following was agreed upon by the jury as their verdict:

"We, the jurors, upon our oaths do say, that Martha Wheat, late of the town of Wallkill, county of Orange, came to her death by reason of being brought in contact with an express train of cars, (known as the Dunkirk-Express train, going west,) running on the New-York & Erie Railroad, at a crossing of the public highway and said railroad track, between the house of Moses Bell, and the store of Isaac & David Mapes, in the village of Howell's, town and county aforesaid, on the 18th day of July, 1855. And we, the jury aforesaid, further find that the said train of cars was unreasonably and negligently managed and conducted: 1st, in running at too great a rate of speed on said day and at the time of said accident; 2nd, that the signals given were not sufficient to apprise Amzi Mapes and the deceased, with whom the latter was a passenger at the time, of the approach of said train.

From the Warwick Advertiser, September 21, 1922

Mrs. Mary E. Ogden, widow of the late Dr. S. E. Holly, died at the Demerest House in this village on Saturday, Sept. 16, about five o'clock. Mrs. Holly had been at breakfast in the morning, apparently in her usual health, and had later returned to her room. Landlord Clarke went to her room shortly after nine o'clock to call her to answer the telephone, and discovered that she was unconscious. He immediately summoned a physician and a nurse, but she did not recover consciousness.
Mrs. Holly was a daughter of the late William L. Ogden and Louisa Baker. She was born at Mount Hope, N. Y., on March 21, 1858, but most of her life was spent in this village, to which her parents moved when she was a child. She married Dr. S. Edwin Holly, of this village, and they lived here until his death several years ago, since which she has divided her time between Brooklyn, East Orange and Warwick. The past summer she has been stopping at The Demarest and enjoying the comradeships of earlier days with her many friends in this village.
Surviving are two sons, J. Ogden, of East Orange, N. J. and Leland B., of Brooklyn.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Virginia G. Ogden, on Oakland avenue, Rev. Taber Knox officiating. Burial in Warwick Cemetery.
Parents: William Lewis Ogden and A. Louisa Baker.

She was married to S. Edwin Holly on 22 Oct 1884 in Warwick, Orange, NY.
