Gilson was a brother to Miranda Gillson Brundage.


Mr. John P. GILSON (Census says GILLSON) of Sparrowbush, died this morning at
7 o'clock at his home in that village, of heart disease and consumption. He
had been an invalid for several years and gradually failed up to last Monday,
when he became worse. From that time, he sank rapidly until his death. His
funeral will take place on Sunday at 11 o'clock a.m. at the Sparrowbush M.E.
Church and the funeral sermon will be preached by Rev. S. Mirteenes, of
Cahoozie, assisted by Rev. J.M Strock , pastor of the Sparrowbush church.
The burial will be in the Sparrowbush Cemetery .Mr. Gilson was one of the
oldest men in this vicinity. He was born March 25, 1802, in the town of
Greenville, this county. In early life he married Miss Sarah Forger, of
Greenville. For some years he lived on a farm in his native town and about
30 yeas ago moved to Sparrowbush with his family and has lived there ever
since, on a farm outside the village. He saw Port Jervis and Sparrowbush
grow to their present dimensions and was widely know in this section. His
wife survives him. His family consisted of eleven children, seven of whom
are living. They are: Timothy, Geheil, and O.P. Gilson of Port Jervis;
Nelson, Jesse, and Horace of Sparrowbush; and Mrs Frank Hissam, of Port
Jervis. Three Married daughters are dead. They were: Mrs. Phoebe Van
Sickle, Mrs. Mary Tuthill, and Mrs. Jane Bailey. One of the dead children
was Samuel, who died very young. Mr. Gilson was one of a family of ten
children. The family is of Norwegian descent, and was one of the first to
settle in this region over 200 years ago. Four Brothers survive him: Gehiel
of Owego, Jerome of Greenville, Perry of Sparrowbus, and Joseph of Buffalo.
Two sisters also survive him, Mrs. Marinda Brundage and Mrs. Mary Ann Carlin,
of Auburn, Schuylkill Co, PA. Mr. Gilson was always a Democrat in politics
and for many years held minor town offices. He was upright and honorable in
all his dealings and was greatly respected by numerous relatives and
aquantices.
