Kimber was born on 11 Sep 1762. He died on 27 Sep 1835 in Xenia, Ohio.
He has reference number 696. Samuel Kimber served in the Orange County Militia
(Land Bounty Rights), 3rd Regiment during the American Revolution per New York
in the Revolution, Vol. 1, pg. 225 compiled by James A. Roberts. I have contacted
the National Archives two times trying to obtain copies of Samuel Kimber's veterans
records without success.
He was elected constable in Minisink in 1794 and was elected as both a tax collector and constable in 1803. On July 10, 1805, Samuel Kimber contributed $5.00 to building the First Presbyterian Church, Westtown, N.Y. [Minisink Bicentennial History] In the 1799 Town of Minisink Tax Assessment Rolls, Samuel Kimber had no real estate. His personal estate was valued to be $27.00 and he was taxed 2 cents. In 1800, his personal estate was assessed for $32.00 with no real estate. Samuel Kimber had attained real estate valued at $270.00 with a personal estate of $42.00 per the 1801 Tax Assessment Rolls for the Town of Minisink. [Microfilm NYS Archives] According to records of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Samuel Kimber acted as a Commissioner of Schools for the Town of Minisink in January of 1800 along with Henry Tucker and Silas Steward [Microfilm on NYS Archives]. Per the 1790 federal census, Samuel Kimber was residing in Minisink, Orange Co., NY with 2 white males under 16, Peter and Benjamin; and 2 females being his 1st (Maria) or 2nd wife (Charity Aber) and a daughter, Sarah. Samuel's family remained in Minisink per the 1810 federal census. His household included one of his wives (Maria or Charity ?); one unknown male 10-16 years, one male 16-26 years, most likely Samuel's son, Benjamin; and one unknown female 10-16 years. A mortgage dated Sept. 17, 1817 from David and Mary Cook of Minisink to Samuel Kimber of Minisink was recorded Oct. 22, 1817 in Orange County records [Mortgage Book O, page 82]. The mortgage was in the amount of $1,000.00 and it was for land in Minisink that had been formerly in the county of Sussex and Eastern Division of New Jersey on the west side of the Wallkill bounded by Joseph Bartons' and Elijah Inmans' lands containing 90 acres and 24/100 of an acres, except 30 acres which Samuel Kimber sold to Increase Mather and at that date in the possession of Isaac Cook. The mortgage was paid and discharged 'as appears by the certificate of Asa Dolson when the same was assigned dated 5th Feb. 1825'. This is the land that George Kimber originally bought in 1762. Beers 1880 History of Darke County, Ohio dates Samuel Kimber's migration to Washington Township to 1818 with his son, Peter. "Samuel and Peter Kimber, from New Jersey, settled on Section 23, improving the same, and living there until 1852, when Peter sold out, but still resided in the neighborhood until his death in 1870, at the age of seventy-nine." Mrs. Ridall of Buffalo, NY, a Kimber-Seeley descendant, contributed a letter written by Samuel Kimber in Greenville, Ohio to his son and nephew to William J. Coulter. William J. Coulter published the account in his 'Genealogical and Historical' column published with the Westbrook family genealogy. [Wantage Recorder, Sussex Co., NJ Jan. 29, 1937 Issue]: Greenville (Ohio) June the 30th, 1829 Dear son and nephew: I once more take my pen in trembling hand to inform you that I am in health hoping that these few lines will find you yours all in health--I have had the worst spell of the rheumatism that I ever had--I were taken the forepart of February and after some days were confined to my bed where I had to continue for some time--I could not get from the bed to the fire for some time, but I have got so that I begin to walk about but I cannot straighten my knee yet. Our friends and neighbors are all well. Wheat looks good and corn looks very good. Sarah Elston says she has got the deed for James land ready for you when you come, we look for you in September, so no more. Samuel Kimber--written to Benjamin and George Kimber.
