Ogden, Oldest Middletown Volunteer Fireman, Dead

Sylvanus Greer Ogden, Middletown's oldest fireman and one of the city's oldest living residents, died yesterday at his home, forty-eight Hanford street. He was ninety-three.
Mr. Ogden was honored only about a month and a half ago as the city's only seventy-year volunteer fireman. During a testimonial dinner at Central Firehouse, the veteran firefighter was presented with a seventy-year pin by Assemblyman Wilson C. Van Duzer.
During his years of membership in the Middletown department, Mr. Ogden had served with the Phoenix Engine Company, and it was his colleagues who arranged the testimonial dinner on March twenty-eighth.
The veteran fireman was born in Branchville, N. J., March twenty-third, 1856, the son of John S. and Aseanath Greer Ogden. He marked his ninety-third birthday last March.
A resident of Middletown for forty-five years, Mr. Ogden was married to Laura Horton, who died some years ago. There are no known relatives who survive.
The aged man joined the Phoenix at the age of sixteen in 1879, to become a member of the rapidly expanding department. During his seventy years of membership he continued to maintain an active interest in the affairs of the organization--although ill health in recent years made it impossible for him to keep up actual attendance at meetings and other functions.
But during the testimonial dinner March twenty-eighth, he arrived to be greeted by three fifty-year members, a telegram of congratulation from Govenor Dewey and a special certificate from City Judge J. Allan Ballman.
Mr. Ogden was also a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at three p.m. Saturday in the Cornelius funeral home. The Rev. D. George Davies will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home tomorrow evening. Parents: John Stewart Ogden and Aceneath Greer.

Ogden--Sept. 26 in this city, of general debility, Thomas P. Ogden, aged 82 years and 26 days. Funeral, Sunday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, from his late residence, No. 27 Mulberry St. Interment in Hillside Cemetery.

Orange County Press, Sept. 30, 1890

Mr. Thomas Purdy Ogden, another of the old residents of Middletown, died Friday afternoon, at his home on Mulberry street, of general debility, aged about 82 years. He leaves a large circle of relatives and friends. The late Lieut. Wood T. Ogden was a son of the deceased.
Thomas P. Ogden was one of a family of eight children, the father being Jonathan Ogden. The latter had two wives. By the first wife there were three sons, Jonathan Graham Ogden, father of the late Henry B. and Jonathan Ogden; Benjamin Ogden, who went west during the war of 1812; Gilbert B. Ogden, who was the father of the late Jno. S. Ogden. By the second wife he had five children: Howell Ogden, who located in Romulus, Seneca county; Daniel Ogden, father of George T. Ogden; Patty, wife of David Wheat, killed by the cars at Otisville many years ago; Thos. P. Ogden, the subject of this sketch, and Sally, who became the wife of Geo. Graham and who went to Kansas to live. All are now dead.
Thos P. Ogden, the deceased, was born in a small house on the William Finn place near Eight-and-a-half station, Sept. 1st, 1808. His father died when he was about three years old. The father was a cooper by trade, and came from New Jersey, where his progenitors had resided for a century, they having originally come from England and first settled in Connecticut. Gov. Aaron Ogden, a brave and capable officer of the Revolutionary army, was a cousin of Jonathan.
Up to the age of 17 or 18, Thos. P. lived with different farmers in this neighborhood, and for two years with his half brother, J. Graham Ogden, and then with John C. Reeve for six or seven years, who then owned the place later occupied by Mr. Geo. Little and which now forms a large part of the H. R. Lowe estate on High street, in this city. From here he went to Montgomery and lived for a year with a Rev. Mr. Condict. Leaving Montgomery he came back to Middletown to learn the cabinet-making business with a Mr. Solomon, who then had a shop on East Main street opposite the Holding House. At the end of three years Solomon gave up the business, and Thos. P. went to Montgomery to work at his trade with Stephen Preston, father of the late Alfred Preston. Working a short time with J. McWilliams in Bloominburg, he returned to Middletown to start business for himself in the old "Poor House" building which stood on the site of Mr. Jacob Groh's place on East Main street. After a year or two he formed a partnership with John Benedict and carried on the cabinet-making and undertaking business under the name of Ogden & Benedict.
In March, 1835, he married Julia W., eldest daughter of John B. Cox.
Purchasing a small lot of land of John B. Cox on W. Main street, adjoining what is now the Commerical Hotel, he there erected a modest shop. In 1837, and for ten or twelve years continued at the cabinet making and undertaking business.
About 1850 he entered into the sash and blind business with Chas. Piatt, Amos Clauson, of this city, and Wm. Wilkison, under the firm name of Ogden, Clauson & Co.
In 1853, while in the sash and blind business, a terrible accident in the engine room deprived him of his eldest son, Theodore, a bright and active boy, who is remembered by a few of our older citizens.
Giving up the sash and blind business, about 1854, he still kept up the undertaking business, which he had taken with him into the firm of Ogden, Clauson, & Co., but after a few years he gave that up, and for many years was known as an expert in the sharpening of that favorite and necessary tool of the cabinet maker, and all woodworkers--the saw.
His later years have been passed in the quietness of a domestic life in which a thoughtful and philosophic mind, a placid disposition and a loving heart have blossomed in a venerable body, venerated by two generations of his descendants.
In the earlier history of the village of Middletown, his name will be found as Tax Collector, Trustee and in minor offices.
Julia W., wife of T. P. Ogden, died in 1865, and since that time his eldest daughter, Rosamond, has presided over his household, and has shown by her patient and affectionate care in his declining years how beautiful and noble may be a daughter's love.
He leaves five children: Miss Rosamond Ogden, at home; Mr. John T. Ogden, the harness maker; Mrs. Hattie O. Myers, with Mr. G. B. Adams; Mr. Harry C. Ogden, with Mr. J. T. King, the druggist; and May Ogden Van Keuren, wife of Mr. W. G. Van Keuren, with Mr. G. B. Adams. The late Wood T. Ogden was also a son.
In politics he was a radical Republican from the time of the Fremont campaign, and was in earnest sympathy with every effort to put down the "slaveholders' rebellion," sending two sons to help strengthen that line of blue which eventually brushed away the clouds of war and gave us these many years of the sunshine of peace.
He was not in sympathy with the prevailing religious tenets of the day. Tenacious of his convictions, which he considered his birthright, he made them the law of his life, and never swerved from them for any mess of pottage which this world in any form might offer. His word was his bond, and in a life of more than 80 years, his reputation as an honest man is unimpeachable A good citizen, faithful husband and loving father he has passed in his long record and has tone to the reward vouchsafed to those who leave this world. "Sans puer et sans reproche."
-------------------------
John T. Ogden and Harry C. Ogden acted as executors for their father's estate. Thomas P. Ogden's will was probated in Surrogate Court Oct. 21, 1890. After all his debts were paid, Thomas P. Ogden left all his property to be divided in six equal part for his children; Rosamond Ogden, John T. Ogden, Hattie O. Myers, Mary A. VanKeuren, Harry C. Obituary
Lieut. Wood T. Ogden
A busy and useful life passed away this morning in the death of Lieut. Wood T. Ogden which occurred at his home on Mulberry street about seven o'clock. His recovery from a fatal disease had not been looked for and only the sick man's wonderful physical endurance and mental determination enabled him to live so long. For many years he had been a keen sufferer from rheumatism and at times was obliged to absent himself from business for weeks at a time. Several months ago he became troubled with a heart and stomach difficulty and in June last was obliged to give up attending to his business and has almost ever since been confined to his home. Occasionally he would rally and be able to ride up town to his store but he could do little work. For several weeks past he was confined to his bed and slowly failing. Early Thursday morning he became unconscious and in that condition he remained until death ended his sufferings.
Woodward Tuthill Ogden was born in this city on the 26th day of November, 1842, and was therefore about 46 years of age. His mother who died in 1865 was Julia W., eldest daughter of the late John B. Cox and his father, Mr. Thomas Purdy Ogden, who survives him at the advanced age of 80 years. His early school training was received in the old Orchard street school house, that alma mater of so many of Middletown's boys. Working on a farm several seasons and then in the carpet bag factory of Matthews & Co., he finally went into
Wheeler, Madden & Bakewell's saw factory to learn the trade of a saw handle maker.
The first year of the War of the Rebellion passes and in '62, old Orange calls upon its citizens for a regiment to show that its years of butter packing and milk and money making and association with the peaceful kine has not eliminated the heroic from the hearts of her sons. The 124th N. Y. Vol., "Orange Blossoms", who went from Goshen in the fall of 1862 and who from Fredericksburgh to Appomattox wrote its history in its blood and the blood of the county's enemies, is a monument of glory to the innate patriotism, courage and manhood of our people. The ancestral valor and patriotism that scaled the heights of Stony Point with "Mad Anthony" in 1779 and participated in the defence of the Canadian frontier in '12 and '14 asserted itself in Wood Ogden in 1862, when he donned the toga cirilis of those terrible years of war, the glorious blue, which alas! with so many was the winding sheet, red with the heart blood of faces white in death.
A companion of the deceased said today that he sees him now as a young soldier of the Union on that awful 2d day July at Gettysburg on the deadly knoll by the Devil's Den. The gallant Col. Ellis has given the order to "charge," he "slaps" the bayonet on the muzzle of his Springfield, his jaw set at the death notch, his face pale with nature's dread, but with eyes "ablaze with battle fire," he rushes forward. His Major (Cromwell) just ahead of him on his horse, turns with a smile of approval upon him, and the next moment is beaten down with that storm which came from the Devil's Den like the "breath from the mouth of hell."
After some desperate work among those rocks our line is drawn back, and "Wood" with a bullet through his right arm, from which the blood from his blouse sleeve runs "like water from a pitcher," retires in a sheltered position where a part of the line of Sykes' Regulars passes over him, and he looks up at their grim, pale features and cheers them on.
After Gettysburgh, he came home on furlough from Summit House Hospital, Philadelphia, where he had been very low with his wound, and his mother with pride repaired the rebel bullet holes in his blouse; proud that she had sons who dare place themselves between their country's flag and its enemies. He loved her, and he was a better soldier for that love in his heart. At his enlistment, although she did not say in words, "my son, go and battle for your country and your flag," but when the instinct of patriotism, honor, and hatred of slavery prompted him to go, the mother's heart felt nay but the blood of her patriot and soldier sire made her proud that he was repeated in her son.
The record of the 124th Regiment shows that Mr. Ogden enlisted in Company K., Aug. 5th, 1862. He was made a corporal the same date; Jan. 1, 1863, he was promoted to sergeant; July 4, 1864, to First Sergeant of the company, and Nov. 15, 1864, to Second Lieutenant. He was engaged with his regiment in a skirmish at Manasses Gap, Nov. 3, 1863, and in the following important engagements: Fredericksburgh, Dec. 13, 1862; Chancellorsville, May 3d, 4th, and 5th, 1863; Beverly Ford, June 9, 1863; Gettysburgh, July 2, 1863; Kelly's Ford, Nov. 3, 1863; Jones' Cross Road Nov. 27, 1863; Mine Run, Nov. 30, 1863; Wilderness, May 5th and 6th, 1864; Spottsylvania, May 10th, 11th and 12th, 1864; Deep Bottom, Aug. 15, 16 and 17, 1864; Boyden Plank Road, Oct. 27, 1864; Weldon Raid, Dec. 7, 1864; Hatcher's Run, Feb. 4, 1865; Second Boyden Plank Road, March 3d to April 2d, 1865; capture of Petersburgh, April 2d and 3d, 1865; Sailor's Creek, April 6, 1865; Farmsville, April 7, 1865; surrender of Lee, April 9, 1865 at Clover Hill, Virginia. He was one of the color guard of the regiment for a long time.
The deceased married Addie Roe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson C. Roe, of Florida, this county, Feb. 22, 1866. She died Oct. 20, 1867 leaving one daughter, Miss Gussie R. Ogden.
In this city in 1869 he started in a small way the sewing machine business and at the same time was a successful pension solicitor, as many a veteran of the war will now gratefully testify. His sewing machine business increasing as the years went by, he added to it musical instruments of all kinds, and the great trade he has built up in that line by extensive advertising and the honorable and liberal manner he has conducted his business has made his name familiar to everyone in this section of the State. At different times he was located over the harness shop of his brother, John T. Ogden, on West Main street, on the corner of James and Main Street, then opposite Canal street on the same street, and a few years later in the Masonic Building in the store occupied by Jacob Gunther on North street. For several years he has occupied both the large store rooms in the Hasbrouck Building next to the Grace Episcopal Church.
The deceased was one of the original members of Monhagen Hose Co., No. 1, and at the time of his death was an honorary member and Vice President of the Company. He was also a member of Hoffman Lodge, No. 412, F. & A. M., and Middletown Lodge, No. 112, I. O. O. F. He was a prominent member of the 124th Regiment Association and of Gen. Lyon Post, G. A. R.
A few years ago he became interested in giving Middletown a first class brass band and assisted in forming the organization of musicians that is now known as "The Wood T. Ogden Military Band." He liberally loaned the organization funds with which to purchase instruments and assumed other liabilities to put the band on a good footing. He has been President of the society since the organization.
He is survived by his second wife, Emma Barrett, (daughter of the Rev. Samuel Barrett, deceased, and Mrs. Matilda Barrett, of this city,) whom he married Dec. 16th, 1869, and her three children, Daisy B., May L., and Frank B., and also his eldest daughter by his first wife, Miss Gussie, Miss Rose Ogden, living with her father at home on Mulberry street; John T. Ogden, the harnessmaker; Harry C. Ogden, with James T. King, the druggist; Mrs. May Ogden Van Keuren, wife of William G. Van Keuren, and Mrs. Hattie Ogden Myers, with Geo. B. Adams, are his surviving brothers and sisters.
In politics Lieut. Ogden was an ardent Republican, and though suffering from great physical disability came to the polls at the last election and gave his vote to the candidates of his party.
The deceased was a man of good judgement, aggressive and original, generous and brave. Given those qualities, you have a useful citizen, an enterprising and successful business man, a warm friend--a gallant soldier.
The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the house on Mulberry street and half-past two o'clock at Grace Episcopal Church, Rev. Mr. McGlathery, the rector, officiating.

Ogden's physical description was included: Age 28; Height five feet eight inches; complexion light; hair brown; eyes gray. Wood T. Ogden prepared and signed an affidavit which stated he had resided in Cleveland, Ohio and Middletown, NY since leaving the service. In his will, Wood T. Ogden appointed his eldest daughter, Gussie R. Ogden, guardian of his younger children until they reached the age of 21. He left $700 in dower rights to his wife, Emma M. Hattie O. Myers and Julia Myers (sister and niece) witnessed Wood signing his will June 6, 1888. David C. Sayer was executor. (David C. Sayer and Gussie R. Ogden later married.) According to an Account of Proceedings in 1891 Emma Ogden and minor children were residing in Belgium. An accounting dated March 27, 1894 indicates Emma M. Ogden had remarried and was living in San Francisco, CA. Her children--Daisy B., May Louise, and Frank B. Ogden were also located in San Francisco.

Wood T. Ogden, Sporting Goods, Sewing Machines, Etc.
Mr. Ogden is a gentleman well known to the people of Middletown, as he has been engaged in business here since 1868, when he opened a general Sewing Machine Agency at No. 30 West Main street; soon thereafter he removed to the corner of Main and James street. His business increased both by his successful management and by the addition of sporting goods which he made and some time thereafter he removed to No. 31 West Main, the place he now occupies. Connected with the Sewing Machine Agency is a store for sale of sporting goods, embracing guns, ammunition, fishing tackle, etc., where will be found the largest and best selection of such goods in Orange County. Mr. Ogden also deals in musical instrument, pianos, organs, etc., together with sheet music; and he is also a pension agent, making the securing of pensions, bounty and pay of United States soldiers a specialty. Mr. Ogden is a thorough, live business man, and any person desiring anything in his line of business or trade will certainly find it to their interest to call upon him. Among his latest novelties in sewing machines is the "Wonderful White Sewing Machine," for which he is agent. Mr. Ogden entered the army as a private in the 124th Regiment N. Y. V. He served with distinction, being wounded four times in the various engagements in which he participated with the "Orange Blossoms," and when mustered out he had his commission as 1st Lieutenant.
