Frank D. Pulis - Chief of the Oakland Fire Department, and a well known mason
contractor. Mr. Pulis has had an interesting career. He was born at Campgaw,
New Jersey December 23, 1876, son of Peter W. and Mary Alice (Drew) Pulis.
Both of his parents are now dead. His father was the proprietor of an
extensive and profitable dairy farm at Campgaw, and was widely known as an
energetic and vigorous business man. Mr. Pulis has one brother, William J.
Pulis and a sister M. Florence, who is now Mrs. Frank Parsons.
Mr. Pulis received his preliminary education in the public schools of
Campgaw. After having completed his academic studies, he proceeded to
Latimer's Business College at Paterson, where he acquired a thorough
knowledge of business methods. After his graduation from the business
college, he gave careful consideration to various kinds of work and finally
decided to devote his attention to the field of masonry contracting. He had a
great liking for construction work of all kinds, and felt that in this field
he would find an excellent opportunity for success. In this opinion he was
entirely correct, as his subsequent career has abundantly proved. He
established the Pulis masonry contracting concern at Oakland fourteen years
ago, after having acquired a great deal of practical business experience in
various connections and met with complete success from the very beginning.
His enterprise has grown steadily, and he has more than once been obliged to
increase his facilities in order to meet the demands made upon him by the
ever-growing number of commissions entrusted to him. His vigorous and
energetic character has impressed itself upon his business, and he has a host
of satisfied customers who come to him because they know they will thus be
sure of prompt and expert service, whether their commissions are large or
small. His success is based upon a thorough knowledge of his chosen field as
well as upon great industry, and in all ranks of the building trades his
judgment is highly respected.
Mr. Pulis has always taken an active interest in local politics. He is a
member of the Republican Party and has served for nine years as borough clerk
of Oakland. He has also held the office of chief of the fire department for
some time. He is a director of the Building and Loan Association of Pompton
Lakes, and devotes a great deal of attention to his duties in that capacity.
He belongs to the Junior Order United American Mechanics, and to the
Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, holding membership in Lodge No.
60 of that organizations. He is also a member of the Civic Club of Oakland,
in which he holds the office of vice-president. In religious faith, Mr. Pulis
is a member of the Methodist Church of Suffern.
On October 10, 1900 he married at Oakland, Annie E. Garrison, daughter of
Peter and Lorinda (Ackerman) Garrison. Mr. Garrison, who was a farmer, died
some time ago; Mrs. Garrison is still living. Mrs. Pulis died in October,
1921, leaving one son, Milton G. Pulis.
Parents: Peter W. Pullis and Mary Alice Drew.

Peter W. Pulis, a resident in this section for his entire life passed away on
Sunday, March 21, after an illness of several months. Funeral services were
held at his late home on Main Street on Wednesday and interment made in
Mahwah Cemetery. Mr. Pulis was born on April 30, 1851. His elementary
education was gained in the district school near his home and Mountain Side
Academy at Suffern, NY. On March 19, 1873 he married Mary Alice Drew of
Warwick, NY. He started his married life as a farmer on the old Pulis
homestead, situated about three miles west of Ramsey. This homestead had
been in the family since 1780. For thirty years he lived on this farm and
