A Veteran At Rest
An Old "Orange Blossom" Buried In
Hillside Cemetery to-day.
David B. Wheat, formerly a well known business man of this city, in the days before the Civil war, died at his home, the Nathan Wheeler farm, near Warwick, on Saturday, at the age of 76 years. To-day the remains were brought to this city, and deposited in the family plot in Hillside Cemetery. His wife had preceded him in death. His only child and son, John, was drowned many years ago off the East Indies, his brothers and sisters are all dead, and he was the very last of his family.
Deceased was born at Howells and was the son of Simeon Wheat. He was reared in that hamlet, and came to Middletown when a young man, and for some time worked in the Ogden grist mill, on Mill street. Finally he and his brother, Lemuel, bought out their father-in-law (having married sisters) John D. Smith, and for some years carried on a sash and blind factory on James street. This was ultimately destroyed in the fire on James Street many years ago.
From Middletown Mr. Wheat enlisted in the Union Army, in the celebrated 124th Regiment "Orange Blossoms" and served through the war. After the war he went to New York and Brooklyn, and while there joined Kimball Post, G.A.R., No. 100. He remained in Brooklyn until December, 1894, when he came to this city and remained until the next autumn, when he bought the Nathan Wheeler farm, between Florida and Warwick, where he removed and had since resided. Mrs. Wheat died some three years ago. Surviving him are only cousins and nephews. One cousin, Robert A. Wheat, accompanied the remains to this city to-day.
The generation which knew him in this city is nearly passed away and only a few of the very oldest of our business men remember him. Parents: David F. Wheat and Martha (Patty) Ogden.

He was married to Eleanor Ann Smith UNKNOWN. Children were: John Wheat, Frances Annabelle Wheat.
