Many Goshen and Middletown Friends Will Deplore His Departure
William Henry Wood, for twenty years a well known resident of this city, and a prominent citizen of Goshen for nearly two score years previous to his coming here, died at his home, 26 1/2 Myrtle avenue, at 9:30 o'clock this morning aged 63 years and 9 months.
Mr. Wood had been in ill health since a year ago last June and for the past two months had been confined to his bed. Heart trouble and Bright's disease were the causes of death.
Mr. Wood was born in New Windsor on Feb. 13, 1846, and spent his boyhood there. When the Civil War broke out he ran away and enlisted as a water boy in Co. 1, First Regiment, New York Volunteer Engineers. He was wounded during the rebellion, after he had been artificer of his company.
After the war Mr. Wood returned to Goshen and on Dec. 8, 1868, he married Miss Katherine Delancy, of that village. He had three children by this marriage, who survive. On Feb. 11, 1889, he again married, wedding Mrs. Emma F. Wright, daughter of the late Joseph S. Ogden, of Goshen, at Brooklyn. One son by this marriage survives.
While a resident of Goshen, Mr. Wood was chief of police, street commissioner and first assistant engineer of Dikeman Hose Co. After coming to Middletown, twenty years ago next Christmas Day, he served as assistant street commissioner under the late Commissioner A. Henry Reed, and later under Commissioner Louis Weintz. Until the time he was taken from his work to his bed, Mr. Wood was employed as engineer of the steam roller.
He was a member of General Lyon Post, No. 266, G. A. R., and of Bradley Camp, Sons of Veterans.
Mr. Wood is survived by his wife, by two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Cramer, of Goshen, and Mrs. Nellie Rockafellow, of Matteawan, and by a son, Edward Wood, of Goshen, all children of the first marriage; and a son, Harry L. Wood, by the second marriage.
Mr. Wood made countless friends during his residence here and in Goshen, who will learn with regret of his death. He was an honest, whole-souled gentleman, and a faithful, energetic public official.
