Notes for J
AMES FRANKLIN FOSTER:
James F. Foster
Listed as J. F. Foster Private in the Company G. 40th Mississippi Infantry J.F. Foster has only two cards in his file. Enlisting 25 Feb 1863 at Vicksburg (may have been a re-enlistment) and dying 5 Sep 1863. The unit was at Enterprise, MS (a small community south of Meridian) at the time of his death.

This regiment was at the siege of Vicksburg which surrendered on July 4, 1863. The Confederates were parolled, but could not return to actual military activities until they were officially "exchanged", which occurred on Sep 12, 1863. As J.F. Foster died between the parole and exchange, we assume he was with his unit at Enterprise awaiting exchange, and probably died of illness. He could have been buried there at Enterprise or his family may have taken his body home - the records do not say.

Company G was initially made up of men mostly from Leake County.

Confederate Soldiers Serving From Mississippi; 40th Infantry, Cl-Ha; Microfilm Series M269, Roll 382.

The two cards are not cards made by the Confederate unit. They were prepared by the US government after the Civil War to insure no Confederate soldier received any benefits. Many of the CSA units destroyed their records when they surrendered to try to keep the occupying forces from taking reprisals on known Confederate soldiers.
