1. Dunbar and Rowland, Military History of Mississippi, (1903), Company G, 40th Mississippi was formed from men of Leake and Winston counties. The regimen was present at the battles of Iuka- Sept 19, 1862 and COrinth OCt 3 - 4, 1862 and Vicksburg Campaign and the Seige. At Iuka the 4Oth was commend on theri bravery. Col. Colbert (regimental commander) stated "the Officers and men behaved well, some with distinguished coolness and gallantry". The 40th brok the Federal line, capturing part of the cannons of the 11th Ohio Artillery Battery. Colbert reported the 40th had 314 men engaged at iuka with 10 KIA and 39 Wia and 21 MIA. At Cornith the 40th was again heavily engraged 5 KIA, 46 WIA, and 16 MIA. During the retreat from Cornith the 40tj was hit by a suprise flank attack from Hamilton's Federal Division and a member of the 17th Iowa captured the regimental falg. That falg is the VAN Dorn PAttern Battle flag and is on display at the Iowa Historical Museum. The 40th was at VIcksburg from Jan 1863 until March 12, 1863. It was then ordered to Synder's BLuff on the Yazoo river, about 11 miles northof VIcksburg. From there ordered to Fort Oemberton, near Greenwood, MS until April 4, 1863. the unit was then order back to Synder's Bluff. When Grant landed at Bruinsburg. the 40th was gaurding the waterfornt at Warrenton and the approaches to the lower fords of the Big Black river. After the Battle of Champion's Hill (May 16, 1863) the 4oth was ordered to postion on each side of the Baldwin's Ferry road. On the morning of MAy 19, 1863 the 40th was ordered to Graveyard Hill to assist in the repluse of the attack by the Federal Army. Casualities of the 40th duiring the seige was 12 KIA, and 38 WIA.
