Notes for Edith Alice May Robinson:
About Robinson, Edith Alice May
Sunderland Echo & Shipping Gazette Dated Tuesday, May 21, 1957 In the Wearside Echoes Section was the following article: As the chimes of midnight rang out over Sunderland, Mrs. G. Robinson picked up the receiver in a telephone booth beside the General Post Office and held it with a trembling hand to her ear. A strange voice, rich in Canadian accents said: "Hello Mom, this is Mary..." This apparently ordinary mother and daughter chat was extraordinary for two reasons. First, mother and daughter had not heard the sound of each others voices for nearly 12 years and secondly Mary was speaking from the living room of her home in New Brunswick. Lined up behind her were her husband, Pat and their seven children. Each of whom were allocated a small part of the precious 15 minutes. At the Sunderland end stood Mrs. Robinson, her son Fred, and daughters Margaret and Irene. The only sad thing about this otherwise happy affair was that deafness excluded Mary`s fathers from the proceedings. He was given the news second-hand when his wife went home afterwards to Dame Dorothy Street. Preparations for the inter-continental call were conducted with great secrecy and understanding by Mary`s husband, Mr. Pat Donovan. First he sent Mrs. Robinson a cablegram indicating that she should expect a call at a particular time and date. Then a minute or two before it was due, he assembled his wife and family by the telephone. Having set the fuse of this emotional time-bomb, Mr. Donovan sat back to await results. The first was tears from two women 3,000 miles apart... then came the halting small talk that somehow always breaks into great occasions.Mary who`s 33 met her husband in hospital at Aldershot shortly after he had been wounded in Normandy. They were married in 1945 and a year later Mary joined her husband in Saint John. The telephone call has been a great tonic to Mr. & Mrs. Robinson, both of whom are in their sixties. Presumably the voices were carried on the recently-inaugurated undersea cable linking Britain and North America, for there was a complete absence of interference and every word could be clearly made out. "But I wouldn`t have known it was Mary" said Mrs. Robinson.."She has gone completely Canadian".
