Notes for Ellsworth Raymond Wolfgang:
Ellsworth Raymond Wolfgang and his brother John David Wolfgang, III married sisters. Ellsworth married Mary Beatrice Karker, AKA Bernice or Beanie and John married her sister Daisy Karker.
Ellsworth did not graduate from high school and married young. He was only 18 years old when his first child, Katherine Bernice was born. It was difficult during the depression for young people. Ellsworth and Bernice lived in the second half of the duplex her mother and step-father owned. Ellsworth would borrow $2.00 from his mother-in-law, go out to the country and buy fruit. He would bring the fruit back to town and sell it door to door and repay Bertha Bernice Karker-Benneyhof the $2.00. Katherine's birth certificate lists her father as a fruit peddler. In those days the occupation of the parents was always listed.
It was seven years later that his second child, Ellsworth Raymond Wolfgang, Jr. was born. By then, they had moved out and were on their own. Ellsworth was a dependable worker and provided for his family.
World War II broke out and Ellsworth was drafted. While he was gone, Bernice had to go to work. During that period of time she became quite independent. When Ellsworth returned home he received reports that his wife had been unfaithful. They discovered they had grown apart and divorced.
Katherine stayed with her father and Ellsworth, Jr. went with his mother since he was only 2 yrs. old. With baby sitter problems, Ellsworth also came to live with his father about a year later. His younger sister, Mildred came to care for the children.
When the children were 11 and 4 years old, Ellsworth remarried. He married Emelia Marie Mausser, AKA Millie. They never had any children since Millie had several miscarriages.
Katherine went to a Catholic convent when she was 17 years old and Ellsworth, Jr. ran away from home to be with his mother who had moved to California. Soon, Millie and Ellsworth, Sr. moved to a farm.
Ellsworth had been an alcoholic for most of his adult life. It was in a bar that he met and became friends of the Hrisko family. Both husband and wife were also alcoholics. Mr. Hrisko knew he was dying of cancer and was fearful for the proper care of his children. Mrs. Hrisko was not a good mother.
Barbara and Debra Hrisko were two of their children. Mr. Hrisko asked Ellsworth and Millie to look after his girls. They took them home and cared for them. One day the welfare people came to inquire about the girls. Their mother continued to collect money for them. The authorities said The Wolfgangs couldn't just take someone's children. When all explanations were made they received background checks and became foster parents. After two years, they wanted to take the girls to California for a vacation. Their natural mother would not allow it even though she made no contact with the girls, not even on their birthdays or holidays. The Wolfgangs went to court to protest. The judge suggested they adopt the girls. When asked, the girls agreed and decided to change their names to Wolfgang.
After the adoption, the family moved to California where Katherine lived.
