 Includes NotesNotes for Anna Tolisz:
There were two other children born to Grandma and Grandpa. They died in infancy. I suspect Rh factor incompatibility from things I heard from Mom that I could identify with in the birth of my own children. I found a record of two daughters, Xenia and Mary Strozak, listed in the guest register from Grandma's funeral under the heading "Family Record, Deceased". I am assuming that they are the two daughters who died.
Grandma is buried in Plain Lawn Cemetery, Hicksville, Nassau Co, NY above Grandpa Row-1;Grave-4;Section-1.
A letter I received from a distant cousin, Tom Chupka, gives insight into why it is so difficult to trace our family:
"When people came from the other side they settled together in the new world. The problem now is that not enough of the old timers are left. Records in the old country were poor to begin with and most were destroyed by the wars. It seemed like they had a war every week over there. My Mom tells me she can still hear the sound of stray bullets coming through the haystacks where she hid when the troops came through her town. It was either the Polish or the Russians or the Austrian troops coming through. Whenever an army retreated they burned everything in their path to keep it from the advancing troops. I guess you know where that left the villagers. Mom told me the Mayor was fluent in all the languages. He'd cry as an army retreated and cheered the advancing troops." 3/14/2000
I remember tales about how Grandma made very fine whiskey during prohibition. I was told that my Aunt Jennie would caramelize sugar to color the whiskey. My father threw out the still when the second floor of the house was remodeled. It was all copper and today would have been worth a pretty penny.
The house at 298 Jerusalem Ave., Hicksville must have been built in 1925. I found a copy of a mortgage between Annie Strozak and John Johnston of Brooklyn in the amount of $1500 dated March 21, 1925. The legal description mentions lots # 133, 135 and 137 and #143, 141 and 139.
Grandma worked at Keystone Glass Mfg. Co., 100 Duffy Ave., Hicksville., NY when she applied for her Social Security number.
