James Edward Dwiggins (son of James Willard Dwiggins and Flora May Russell) was born 28 Feb 1890 in Madison Co. Indiana, and died 26 Apr 1969 in Orestes, Indiana. He married Zella Wardwell on 30 Nov 1909 in Madison Co. Indiana, daughter of Isaac Orville Wardwell and Mildred Abigale Glass.
Notes for James Edward Dwiggins:
James was called Ed most of the time. Little is known about his life in detail except he grew up on a farm in Orestes and worked hard.
Ed was a master of string instruments playing almost everything that had strings from banjos, mandolins, guitars and fiddles. During Vaudeville times he was employed in local theaters to play music that corresponded to the scenes in the movie. He was described as son Garland watched one day from his seat. "I was so proud of my dad. While the movie was playing he was in the front of the movie house at the side and during the exciting scenes he was fiddling fast and furious. During the tender scenes the music was slow and appropriate. He also sang with his buddies along Orestes streets. His singing friends were Cecil Davis, Orval Allen, Walter Morton, Fred May and Cecil Moyer. His musical influence flowed to his sons Robert and Jack and Grandson Steve Dwiggins, Robert's son. They became fine musicians.
He was a farmer and laborer as he worked for the Elwood Tin Plate and Johns Manville Corporation in Alexandria. He had also worked at a coal yard in Elwood operated by a man named Cash Bruce. He delivered coal with a two horse team and a wagon. He worked on their own farm and also helped on the farms of others. He was a hard working man continually cutting wood for the family stove. The black stove was used for cooking everyday and also for heat in the winter. It had a warmer on top and a warm water reservoir on one end. The family spent most of their time in the kitchen during the winter where it was warm. He moved the family to Elwood for several years because travel was difficult but most of his life was in Orestes.
He enjoyed raising and training dogs for treeing coon and opossum for night time hunting adventures. At one time Ed owned "Old Rube" one of the best cooners of the area.
The family didn't have a lot of money so he dressed the hides and sold the furs for extra income. One of his hobbies was trading most anything he had to another hoping to get the best of the deal. He also enjoyed hunting before the season was opened December 10th of each year and challenged the local game wardens to catch him. Often times the furs were hidden in fodder shocks.
One of the things the rest of the family enjoyed was his tall stories about most anything he could think of. Many of the stories were about Idaho. One of his great grandsons was asked if he wanted to go with the family to see grampa. The grandson asked, "the one that use to be an Indian?"
