 Includes NotesNotes for Zella Wardwell:
The family lived on a farm most of the years and Zella baked much of the time and regularly had pies setting in the window to cool. She loved baking cobblers with lots of thick crust. If you didn't eat your piece of pie or cake at dinner time she hid it and was strict about eating between meals. She cooked on a big black cook stove. The stove was used for so many things. It was used to cook the family food, it was warmth in the winter and kept the iron hot for keeping the clothes neat a presentable. Zella churned butter and let it set in a one pound mold that left the imprint of a small flower on top of the butter. She also skimmed the cream off the top of the milk, curdled and drained making cottage cheese. On Saturday the family would drive to town in the horse and buggy and deliver buttermilk and cheese to regular customers. She also took care of the milking while Ed was away working.

Zella was tall and frail and after having the flu in 1918 she had a chronic cough. She was so thin that she seldom allowed her photograph to be taken.

Before Memorial Day each year she constructed roses and other small flowers by wiring and stretching the petals made of crepe paper. She used all colors and constructed the green paper as leaves wrapped around the flowers. She dipped some of the flowers in paraffin. She sold them by the dozens.

She played the piano and guitar and loved to sing and became a member of the Orestes Baptist Church in 1949.
