An effort was made to settle the family on a large tract of
land near Terre Haute. This proved a most unfortunate venture.
After enduring many hardships and the loss of mother, two
sisters and one sister-in-law, the family abandoned the
enterprise and returned, much impoverished, to Butler county,
Ohio, and Wayne county, Indiana.
