Includes NotesNotes for William Legg Sr.:
The Legg Families of Maryland

by Thomas F. Gundy

In working backward from the present through each previous
generation, a point is reached where records become scarce and family
movements become nearly impossible to trace. At that point it is very
difficult to follow the path with any assurance that you are correct and
accurate. Speculation leads the way until proof can be found.
In the Legg family, proof stops with the Thomas Jackson Legg
generation. From there it is an educated guess that his parents were
Arthur & Lydia Legg, although enough circumstantial evidence exists for
me to believe they were. Beyond that, the puzzle gets tougher. Certain
records indicate that Arthur & Lydia came from Maryland. I have found no
record to give me a clue as to who Arthur or Lydia's parents were or
exactly where they came from, but I have examined some Maryland records
and have a rough picture of the Legg families in that state.
In reviewing the census records, it becomes apparent that the Legg
families are pretty much clustered in at few counties, and as one goes
back in time the groupings are tighter. In 1850 there were 33 Legg
families listed in Maryland; 20 in Queen Anne's Co.; 6 in Baltimore Co.;
5 in Kent Co.; 1 in Ann Arundel Co.; and 1 in Caroline Co. In 1820, 12
out of 19 were from Queen Anne's Co. And in 1800, 13 out of 14 listings
were in Queen Anne's Co.
By examining the census records further, we learn that the Legg
families were located close together, which would indicate that the
families were probably related to one another. Most were found on Kent
Island in Queen Anne's Co.
The biographical Cyclopedia of Representative Men of Maryland and
District of Columbia, pub. In 1879, Vol. II, p. 499 tells us, "The family
homestead, 'Legg's Beginning,' in Cox's Neck,... was first settled by
William Legg, an Englishman, under a warrant obtained from Governor Hart,
in 1717, and has descended, intact, to the heirs of each generation."
Another record suggests that Leggs were present before this, as the name
of William Legg appears as early as 1694 in St. Mary's Co.
The early land records of Queen Anne's Co. Show numerous listings
for William, John, John C. and John C. Legg Jr. They seem to have been a
prolific lot, for their numbers blossom by the early 1800's and the names
are often repeated in generation after generation. The most common name
is John. With one in nearly every generation of each family. William,
Jacob, James, Samuel, Henry, and Moses are also well represented with a
smattering of others such as Aquilla, Basel, Benjamin, George, Rubin, &
Silas. The women's names are best represented by Mary and Ann. With an
adequate compliment of Sarah's, Susan's, Rebecca's, and Kates.
About 1810, a few Leggs start showing up in Baltimore Co., in the
city of Baltimore. This may represent a splinter of the Kent Island
group. Or it may be a different line altogether. The few Kent Co.
families may likewise be an off-shoot from Kent Island.
There are random records from around the state that contain the Legg
name. But I have yet to complete the connection between Arthur or Lydia
Legg and any specific family in Maryland. In any event, it is most
likely that the origin of our Legg family is England, and that they were
established in Maryland before moving on to Ohio in the early 1800's.
