! John was born November 3, 1930, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He attended
Washington State College, and Seattle Pacific College. He served in the United
States Coast Guard, in Seattle, WA, at a Life Boat Station at the mouth of
the Columbia River, in Oregon, and finally at the Cape Meers Lighthouse. He
meet Nancy Dixon, who was a student, at the time, in one of his brother Bob
Helgeson's Highschool classes. After she graduated from Highschool, they had a
June marraige. They returned to his station at the lighthouse. The Coast
Guard provided them with a house. After his tour of duty, John & Nancy
returned to Seattle, where he worked for his Father at Central Trailer
Exchange, Inc.. He sold his interest in CTE, in 1965 and opened a Mobilehome
Dealership in South King County named Central Mobile Home Sales. After a few
years, they moved to Cle Elum, Washington, he had his mobilehome dealership in
Ellensburg and the Chevrolet dealership in Cle Elum. After a few more years he
moved to Spokane, and opened Spokane Travel Center, a R.V. dealership. He
remained in Spokane for many years. Later, he opened another R.V.
dealership, South Sound R. V., in Olympia, Washington. He bought a 46' Morgan
two masted sail boat, while he was in Spokane, and sailed in Lake Coeur d'
Alene, but moved it to Olympia, to sail Puget Sound. He now owns an R.V.
dealership named Inland Trailer Sales, at Burlington, WAshington. His sailboat
is moored in front of his home at La Conner. He has sailed in the Greek
Islands, the South Pacific & the Caribbean Sea. John and Nancy have three
children, Kim, Dixon and Carol Anne. They have six grand-children and three
step-grand children.

Kalama, a town of 1,216 population in Washington State, is a long distance
from headquarters of Harvest States Cooperatives, which operates a major grain
export terminal in the western community on the Columbia River. The co-op is
based in St. Paul, Minn.
Stretched out alongside Interstate Highway 5, Kalama is 25 miles north of
Vancouver, Wash.; 28 miles north of Portland, Ore.; and less than a mile, on
the east bank of the Columbia waterway, from the State of Oregon.
The original elevator at Kalama was built in 1962, remodeled and expanded in
1966 and again in 1981. Its current storage capacity is six million bushels.
Harvest States's facility at Kalama is primarily a wheat export house,
handling mainly spring, winter, and white wheat types. The remainder of the
export volume at the port is composed of barley and rye.
FEW TRUCK RECEIPTS. Little incoming grain arrives at the Kalama terminal by
truck. The bulk of receipts come by rail and barge. The Kalama facility is
served by the Burlington Northern and Union Pacific Railroads, which are
employed on an alternating-year basis.
Tows on the Columbia generally include three barges. Some come from as far
distant as Lewiston, Idaho, 375 miles from Kalama.
Harvest States has operated the Kalama terminal under its name since 1983,
when the former leaseholder, North Pacific Grain Growers, became a founding
member of Harvest States.
MANAGEMENT TEAM. Manager of the Kalama terminal of Harvest States is Lance
Helgeson. Two of his top assistants are Russell L. Carlson and Gregg
Rothenberger.
Helgeson is a native of St. Cloud, Minn., and an alumnus of the University
of Minnesota. He joined predecessor Grain Terminal association in the 1978 at
Superior, Wis., and in 1981 was transferred to terminal operations at the
co-op's St. Paul headquarters.
When Harvest States was formed in 1983 as a merger between GTA and North
Pacific Grain Growers, Helgeson was assigned to the Kalama export facility.
Carlson is assistant manager of the terminal and Rothenberger is assistant
superintendent.
Helgeson, Carlson, and Rothenberger are regular members of the Columbia
River chapter of the Grain Elevator & Processing Society, most of whose members
live and work in or around Vancouver and Portland. In eastern Washington,
where Harvest States has an operation at Kennewick, Jerry Burgin of the co[op
staff is secretary of the Inland Empire chapter of GEAPS.
MARINE FACILITY. The wharf at Kalama is ome 780 feet long. Rothenberger is
responsible for grain receiving by barge and by rail.
The Columbia River, on which the Harvest States Kalama export operation is
located, has a draft of 42 feet.
Most shipments are destined for Pacific Rim countries, according to
Assistant Manager Carlson. Vessels take on their American grain cargoes for
the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and other Pacific Ocean
nations, he noted.
"This year, we loaded our first ship bound for Chile, in South America,"
Carlson added.
When the accompanying photo of the marine facility was taken, a vessel, not
visible because it was almost completely loaded and therfore out of sight, was
taking on a cargo for Japan. The ship flew the Japanese flag.
Rothenberger said that the elevator was notified 48 hours in advance
concerning the arrival times for vessels.
"We work seven days a week, 24 hours a day, when it's required," Carlson
observed. Outgoing shiploads range from 6,000 metric tons to as large as
25,000 metric toms, he added.
Harvest States at Kalama employs 23 operating persons plus Helgeson,
Carlson, and Rothenberger and two office personnel.
CARLSON HESTORY. Assistant Manager Russ Carlson has spent his entire
career, 20 years, with the cooperative. He began as a summertime employee at
the firm's elevator in Superior, Wis. Carlson was a student at the University
of Wisconsin, Superior, where he graduated with dual majors in mathematics and
physics.
(A couple of miles away but also in Kalama, the Peavey Grain arm of
