He had a brother, George and two sisters. Leo was born deaf. His sister, Mary, became deaf after a childhood illness. Together, they were sent to Faribault School for the Deaf. Their folks didn't want to send them away from home, but they wanted them to get a good education. Leo enjoyed his schooling and was very proud of his education. He graduated from Faribault in 1917.

One of the places Leo worked after his graduation was at Northern Cooperage in St. Paul. At one point, a sharp-bladed machine came crashing down narrowly missing his head, but cutting his arm. Fortunately, his arm only bore a scar from the accident. Leo enjoyed deer hunting and fishing in his early manhood, sometimes way up around the wild country near International Falls. He dressed very well in the fashions of the day which included spats. His niece, Leona, recalls getting rides in a sporty blue car with yellow spoke wheels. She also remembers his teasing, fun-loving ways when the ferret he trained to ride in this coat pocket kept poking its head out to surprise her.

He married Willanna Harvey and they had a daughter, Harriet. He was working as a cook these years at a St Paul Hotel. His wife saw a notice for help wanted in Alaska when the Alaskan Highway was being built. He left the family and went to work as a baker for the road building crews for 2 years. He talked of the bears, the rough roads, the holes being blased through mountains and the steep grade of the raods making him a little nervous.

On his return, with the money earned, he and his bought a resort near Nisswa, MN. Together they operated Werner's Resort which was a successful and enjoyable time in their life. But after the death of his wife, the upkeep and work became too much for him. He sold his business of 21 years and retired. Some years later, he met and married Adeline Campbell, but after a few years they divorced. In 1975, he came to share a household with his sister-in-law from his second marriage, Naomi Ogg. Naomi could sign, so for Leo this beacme the start of a very good arrangement and friendship, which lasted until his death.

This is the point where many of us here came to know Leo, as part of Naomi's family. With family members there were trips - to a Lake Kabetogama cabin, to Faribault School to reminisce and meet his old school friend, Wesley Lauritsen, to Nisswa area to try and locate his old resort. And, there were weddings and other family events and holiday celebrations together.

In the last couple years of his life, some very special events and people have come into his life. There was a wonderful reunion with daughter, Harriet. And there were visits with his niece, Leona. A visting nurse said to Naomi wouldn't it be nice for Leo to have more company from people who could sign. She put up a notice and two wonderful friends responsed, Gail Cywinski and Susan Davis. Also, Debbie Demmings, a home health aid who can sign and who signed during the funeral service for Leo, became a good and helpful friend. These friends brought gifts, trips to the zoo , a meeting with Bob Lauritsen, son of school friend, Wesley, and many visits and fun.

Leo was a very good-hearted and fun-loving man. HE would find a way to get a smile out of a child and to communicate even though most of his friends could not sign, with notepads or through Naomi's interpretation or familiar universal gestures. He always asked about what was going on in our life - about our work, trips, family, pets. Leo was a great Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan.

The years had been fun for Leo. He had been a man who enjoyed remarkably good health and rally only began to show his age in the last few years. Leo enjoyed life and lived a good, long life. He's had many interesting experiences and many wonderful things have happened in his life. Parents: Mathis Werner and Wilhelmine Christl.
