VIRGINIA BEACH -- Retired U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Goldsborough Serpell
Patrick, 91, died March 21, 1999, in Virginia Beach.
Rear Adm. Patrick had a distinguished naval career culminating in
his appointment as Inspector General of the Navy in 1963. Prior to
that, he was Chief of the Military Assistance Advisory Group,
Netherlands.
Early assignments on the USS Augusta, the USS Pope and the USS
Farragut in the Pacific established Rear Adm. Patrick as an
innovator in ordnance and gunnery. As gunnery officer, he
participated in the development of the concept of a combat
information center to integrate the data that was available from new
technologies being introduced into the fleet. In 1941, he served on
the staff of Commander Destroyers Pacific at Pearl Harbor, with
responsibilities for gunnery and ordnance. His directive that live
ammunition be stored in the gun mounts of the ships moored in Pearl
Harbor so that it might be accessible in an emergency contributed to
the resistance to the Japanese attack. In 1943, he commissioned the
USS Preston, which was to be under his command for the duration of
the war in the Pacific. He was awarded the Navy Cross for
extraordinary heroism in connection with his command of the Preston
during the assaults on the islands of Okinawa and Iwo Jima in the
spring of 1945. Other decorations included a Letter of Commendation
with Ribbon for meritorious service, the Bronze Star Medal and a
Gold Star.
After the war, Rear Adm. Patrick commanded the USS Arcadia (1953)
and the USS Wisconsin (1955). He was selected to Rear Admiral in
1957 while serving as Director of the Atomic Energy Division, Navy
Department, and subsequently served as Commander Cruiser Division
One (1958).
Rear Adm. Patrick was born April 26, 1907, on Goat Island, San
Francisco Bay. He was the son of Jane Deakins Serpell of Norfolk and
Chaplain Bower Reynolds Patrick, USN, Senior Chaplain of the Navy.
He attended Harvard Military School in Los Angeles and Maury High
School in Norfolk. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in the
Class of 1929.
Rear Adm. Patrick was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Charlotte
Edna Moore. He is survived by a daughter, Jane Patrick McJennett,
and her husband, John F. McJennett III, of Providence, R.I.; two
granddaughters, Dr. Patricia McJennett Scott and her husband, Dr.
John D. Scott, of San Francisco and Megan Elisabeth McJennett of Ann
Arbor, Mich.; and two sisters, Mrs. H. Banks Edwards of Houston and
Mrs. J.L. Thompson of Santa Cruz, Calif.
In June 1964, Rear Adm. Patrick retired to Virginia Beach, where he
became active in civic affairs. During the 1960s, he was chairman of
the Virginia Beach Beautification Commission, which worked with the
city to charter a division to carry on the commission's objective.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 10 a.m.
Friday, March 26, at Eastern Shore Chapel, Laskin Road, Virginia

Bower,

Mother passed away at a little after midnight today. As far as I can tell she went peacefully. We are having a short service at a local mortuary for her on Friday. Bick is representing the cousins. She will be interred on Wed. May 5 at Fort Rosecrans, the military cemetery near San Diego. Her grave will be next to my father's. I am encouraging everyone on the East coast not to attend, as the journey is just too far for a short family service.
