He was buried in Elmwood Cemetary, Norfolk, VA. Married at "Ashland", Prince George County, Md.

Served in 1st Maryland Confederate Cavalary, captured on mission to Washington, DC, tried as a spy, sentenced to death, commuted and sent to Point Lookout, MD, POW camp from which he escaped. Captured again at Gettysburg, he was imprissoned in Ohio until the end of the war.

Worked as a construction engineer on the B&O railroad in building the Pittsburg segment. Later, used this knowledge to acquire timber property in NC, which he was able to harvest and bring to market in Norfolk, VA, by constructing extensive rail lines to interconnect the properties. passed on the 14th day of April, 1802, entiled, "An act to establish an uniform rule of
Naturalization, and to repeal the acts heretofore passed on that subject." And it appearing
to the satisfaction of the Court here, that the said Richard Serpel did on the 24 day of June 1844, before the Court of Monroe County in the state of New YOrk declares on his corporal
oath, his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce and adjure all
allegiance and fidelity to any Foreigh Prince, Potentate, State, or Sovereignty whatever, and
paticularly to the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland to whom he was a subject, and the court
here being satisfied by competent testimony, and the said Richard Serpel ..."
