Moved to Natchez vicinity about 1770, having to abandon the Carolinas due to his Tory sympathies. Build a home near Natchez called "La Grange". Involved in the military revolt that threw the Spanish out of Natchez in April, 1781. When the re-occuption of Natchez occurred, he sent his wife and three children toward a British outpost on the Savanah River; however, his wife was thrown from her saddle and, suffering from mortal injuries to her ribs when her horse slipped and fell. They returned to Natchez where she died several weeks later of complications of the broken ribs. After her death, John and his son tried to escape; however, John was unfortunate in that he was captured, tried, and imprisoned in Havana, Cuba. He was later parolled with the stipulation that he never return to Spanish territory, under a $5,000 bounty if he was found. When he heard that his children were impoverished, he voluntarily presented himself to Gov Galvez in New Orleans with the stipulation that the $5,000 bounty be paid to his children. Gov galvez was touched by this display fatherly devotion and gave John an unconditional pardon. Parents: Solomon ALSTON and Anne Nancy HINTON.
