Notes for Thomas Emerson Bond Mattern:
My grandfather used to talk about his uncles, John and Bondy. My grandmother knew them only slightly, because her mother was a first cousin of Elizabeth (Domer) Mattern (hence our double relationship). I may have mentioned that my grandparents met via this family connection.

My grandma told me that when she was a little girl she was having dinner with Bondy and his family and that Bondy got up from the table with the butcher knife and announced to everyone that he was going down to the stable to kill their horse. His wife called for her sons and told them to go and stop their father before he sent the horse to its final reward. My grandfather always said that Bondy was under the influence of painkillers such as morphine and laudenum and that he got addicted while being treated for some sort of ailment such as a kidney infection. My grandfather was only 14 when Bondy died, so I would guess that he heard these details from his father.

The house that my grandparents lived in from 1922 until 1986 was the home in which Bondy and his family resided ca. 1900. (2825 Fifth Avenue, Altoona, PA). Originally purchased in 1895, Bondy sold the property to his brother Robert about 1903, who in turn sold it to my grandfather. The garage in the back yard supposedly was made from the lumber that was salvaged from the stable where the unfortunate horse resided.
