274. Benjamin Talbot
(30)(247)
was born before 26 Apr 1713 in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. John Turner
made a will, dated January 12th, 1730, as stated in later writings, but it is
not to be found, and letters of administration were granted to Sarah Turner,
his widow, March 6, 1732/3. He devised the land, 134 acres, to Benjamin Talbot,
and his clothing to John Chapman, which is all that is known of the will. Joseph
Talbot, as heir at law, gave a release to his brother Benjamin Talbot for the
land, April 26, 1734 and Sarah Turner, the widow, also signed a release, April
2, 1737.
Joseph Talbot, the eldest son, having taken the land of his father, obtained
releases from the other heirs, as they became of age, or soon after. The names
and dates are as follows: Mary Talbot, July 15, 1731; Benjamin Talbot, April
26, 1734; Sarah Talbot, March 3, 1738; John Talbot, Dec 22, 1730; Hannah Talbot,
Oct. 4, 1742. Joseph also purchased from his brother Benjamin the eastern half
of the original Turner tract, in 1741, and upon this erected a grist mill on
what is kown as Rock run, formerly called Martin's run. This mill was built
prior to December 20, 1744 but the first building was of wood. In 1792 the stone
building on the same site was erected by James Emlen, and is now owned by Humphrey
Yearsley.
BIOGRAPHY: Benjamin Talbot lived in several parts of Chester County, Pennsylvania,
and apparently in Caernarvon Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Quaker meeting
records show transfers for Elizabeth and children from Darby MM to Chester MM
to Bradford MM. Bradford sent a certificate of transfer to Exeter MM, Berks
County, Pennsylvania in 1770 which was rejected by Exeter MM on grounds that
Elizabeth did not seem to be a Quaker. A Bradford MM committee spoke to Elizabeth
and Benjamin and concluded that they seemed to prefer the Church of England,
noting that their daughter Mary had married a man professing with that Church.
